KY Afield Outdoors: Spotted Bass School in Fall

Lake Cumberland holds a bountiful population of spotted bass with many fish in the 14- to 16-inch range. Spotted bass make up roughly half of the black bass found in the lake.

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - They were not even recognized as a distinctive fish species until 1927. People for many years believed these fish only existed in Kentucky.

In 1956, the Kentucky legislature designated this species the "Kentucky bass" and made them the official state fish. Many anglers, especially in the south-central portion of the United States, still call the spotted bass a Kentucky bass.

They pale in reputation to their black bass cousins, the largemouth and smallmouth bass, but the spunk shown once hooked and their abundance should raise the profile of the overlooked spotted bass. They are also aggressive and readily strike lures.

It isn't hard to tell when a spotted bass strikes.

We've completed the official count and I am excited to inform you that the Lindsey Wilson family secured 4,083 donors in 48 hours to surpass the Board of Trustee's challenge of 4,000!

This was a monumental effort which could not have been accomplished, as our slogan says, without everyone being All-In. When I say everyone, I want to thank our students (Columbia campus, community campuses, online students), faculty and staff, the Columbia/Adair County residents, businesses, and school system employees for their generous giving and support.

LWC International Student Program is going bananas

By Autumn Lynn

Going Bananas is as easy as pie? Oh really, we will have banana pie? The use of idioms can create an extra layer of difficulty when trying to communicate in a foreign language.

To help combat this, LWC ISP Ambassadors Erica Smith and Brandon Reed offered a lesson centered on English idioms and figurative language on Wednesday, September 24th at the ISP house on 304 Lindsey Wilson Street in Columbia, KY. A group of International Students from South Korea and Japan participated in this tutoring session.

The students received slips of paper with idioms on them and were asked to decipher the meaning based on the definition and an example with phrases such as 'all ears' and 'cold feet.' It was amazing to see the transformation during the session, when a student's rather blank impression changed into the "aha" impression. Don't be surprised when you run into one of them and they will tell you that they no longer have cold feet...SMILE.

Letter: Something needs to be done

Comments re article 106372 Letter Businesses want the road problem addressed

By Richard Raines

I'm going to jump on the band wagon about the need for something to be done on the 3 lane section of North 55. This highway has been a source of numerous accidents ever since it was improved in the early 1970's (a good number of the fatal), including at least one I am aware of before the road was opened. "Improving" it to 3 lanes has seemed to only make the matter worse. I don't have any suggestions except for the 55 MPH speed limit on that road to be strictly enforced (I know that is not popular with people), but if the state won't step in and do something, slowing people is probably the best that can be done).

There are numerous roads in the county that seem to have more than their fair share of accidents, most are the better roads in the county, besides Hwy 55, the Parkway and East Hwy 80 to name a couple. My mother was injured in an accident on Hwy 80 near our home 2 months before her death. While the accident wasn't fatal, it did cause a rapid decline in her health and mental status. I have tried to get someone from the state to look at that intersection to see if a caution light or something to warn traffic on 80 about a hidden intersection could be done, but my inquiries have fallen on deaf ears.

What does it take to get the state to look into fixing the dangerous places on our roads in the county? A multi-fatality accident? With someone having a lawyer aggressive enough to sue the state over the road condition design leading to the accident?

Letter: Avoids travelling the new road

Trilby Vance writes:
I agree. I live in Cane Valley and I avoid traveling on the new road by driving the old 55 that is available. Speeding is a huge problem as well as the layout of new 55.

Re-marking the passing lane to a turning lane sounds like a great way to do it. Adair, a great place to call home! Lot of good happening in the community. --Trilby

Letter: Unsafe choices

Calvin Claywell writes:
Maury, according to your own statement, you made two unsafe choices. First, you pulled into the street in front of a loaded log truck already at speed and momentum. Wait for a safe entrance into the roadway. The truck driver merged into the passing lane (inside lane) in order to give you a safer entrance into the street. Second, you should have gave the truck driver the courtesy by letting the truck merge back into the right lane (right lane), but instead you sped up beyond the speed limit just to get in front of the truck. --Calvin

Carol Perkins: Deep relaxation

Previous Column: You're not going to believe this

By Carol Perkins

I pulled myself onto the massage table before the therapist entered the room. The warmth of the under sheet relaxed my weary body-weary from sitting too long at my computer while working on another book and from trying to tend to every detail so as to avoid flaws (Impossible).

The soreness in my neck was worse than I thought it was and my back ached. Even my elbows hurt. "It won't be long until I'll feel better," I thought as she began.

Jill (England) at Dr. Kelly McMurtrey's office in Edmonton turned on the soothing music and began massaging my temples and circling my face and nose, loosening my sinuses and giving me more breath. Deeper and deeper, I was sinking into meditation mode until I heard something that sounded like wheezing. "Oh, no," I thought, "my sinuses have opened up and now I'm wheezing! My asthma is going to act up at the worst time!"

CHFS: Time to get your flu shot

By Christina Dettman/Barbara Fox

Frankfort, KY - The Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), is encouraging Kentuckians to get vaccinated against the flu, as the official flu season begins Sept. 29 and runs through May 16, 2020.

DPH officials are reporting 154 laboratory-confirmed flu cases in regions across the state since Aug. 4.

"Getting the flu can be debilitating and sometimes life-threatening," said Dr. Angela Dearinger, Commissioner of DPH. "Vaccination is the best tool we have to prevent the flu. It is also extremely important to take simple preventive steps to avoid the flu and other illnesses that tend to circulate at this time of year - wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and stay home when you are sick."
