Letter: Something needs to be done

Comments re article 106372 Letter Businesses want the road problem addressed

By Richard Raines

I'm going to jump on the band wagon about the need for something to be done on the 3 lane section of North 55. This highway has been a source of numerous accidents ever since it was improved in the early 1970's (a good number of the fatal), including at least one I am aware of before the road was opened. "Improving" it to 3 lanes has seemed to only make the matter worse. I don't have any suggestions except for the 55 MPH speed limit on that road to be strictly enforced (I know that is not popular with people), but if the state won't step in and do something, slowing people is probably the best that can be done).

There are numerous roads in the county that seem to have more than their fair share of accidents, most are the better roads in the county, besides Hwy 55, the Parkway and East Hwy 80 to name a couple. My mother was injured in an accident on Hwy 80 near our home 2 months before her death. While the accident wasn't fatal, it did cause a rapid decline in her health and mental status. I have tried to get someone from the state to look at that intersection to see if a caution light or something to warn traffic on 80 about a hidden intersection could be done, but my inquiries have fallen on deaf ears.

What does it take to get the state to look into fixing the dangerous places on our roads in the county? A multi-fatality accident? With someone having a lawyer aggressive enough to sue the state over the road condition design leading to the accident?
