Lindsey Wilson celebrates its Methodist Heritage

By Venus Popplewell

The Lindsey Wilson College community celebrated its connection to The United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, during the annual Church College Celebration Day.

The college - which is affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church - held Church Celebration Day in V.P. Henry Auditorium. Church College Celebration Day was started more than 20 years ago by then-LWC Provost and Dean of the Faculty Walter S. Reuling as an expression of the college's relationship with The United Methodist Church, which dates to LWC's founding in 1903.

The ceremony consisted of songs of worship, scripture readings, a college affirmation by Instructor of Religion and LWC Chaplain Troy Elmore, a church affirmation by LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., and a message by Rev. Dr. Paul Fryman who served the United Methodist Church for nearly 40 years as a pastor and then later as the district superintendent.

Letter: Sign may not be missing after all

Jason Rector writes:
Constable may have solved your mystery? In regards to this sign, I'm pretty sure it's not missing, maybe it's just got turned around to the backside over the years? I looked out the Courthouse doors while in the office late yesterday evening looking toward Jamestown hill and it appears the exact wording from the picture appears on the backside of one of the historical signs. --Jason

Jason, thank you! The team of Adair Heritage Association investigators and defenders of Columbia and Adair County's history will be following up for the final word on the courthouse lawn markers. - LW

Letter: Calling Mike Watson, photo ID needed

Betty Ann Wells writes:
Mike Watson, I have a large photo of someone who was unidentified. I believe he was one of the Field family. He has short, dark hair, a full mustache, a bushy, but trimed, beard, and "bags" under his eyes, a dark suit, vest buttoned to the top. I wonder if you could identify him from a snapshot.

I have never found a photo of Elijah Creel Field, son of the John Field who owned the Field house. Elijah was a physician who gave aid and comfort to soldiers from both sides of the Civil War, and was assassinated shortly after the War by one or more citizens of Adair county for doing so. I have never found an exact date of that death. I am hoping that the photo I own is his. All the best! --Betty
Betty, thanks for writing. We'll let Mike know about your letter, and post the photo with this article in hopes that an ID is possible. --Pen
