Scenic Kentucky: Irvington Coaling Tower

2019-08-27 - Breckinridge Co., KY - Photo by Tiffany Kessler.
Just like most of Kentucky's 120 counties, the history of Breckinridge is captivating. The county was named for John Breckinridge (1760-1806), a Kentucky Attorney General, state legislator, United States Senator, and United States Attorney General. Divided from vast Virginia at that time, it was only the 38th Kentucky county in order of formation. Pictured is an old coaling tower.

Letter: Adair Schools enrollment question

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Where does the total number of students fit, historically speaking? Are the numbers increasing, decreasing or remaining relatively static? --BJF
Thanks for writing. We got the following information from Robbie Harmon, Dean of Students/Director of Pupil Personnel at Adair County Schools. It looks like enrollment has been fairly stable over the last 7 years, with a peak occurring in the 2014-2015 school year.
  • 2019-20 School Year: 2,606 students
  • 2018-19 School Year: 2,580 students
  • 2017-18 School Year: 2,615 students
  • 2016-17 School Year: 2,594 students
  • 2015-16 School Year: 2,668 students
  • 2014-15 School Year: 2,712 students
  • 2013-14 School Year: 2,601 students
Robbie says the numbers do not include preschool students, but do include K-12 students on the main campus plus enrollments at Adair Learning Academy inside Adair Youth Development.

We've asked him about recent previous decades for comparison, and we'll update if the information can be tracked down. We did find in an old issue of the Adair County News that enrollment in the 1960's was as much as 2,998 when Wallace Coomer was Superintendent (1966).

Basic Training recruits can now earn associate's degree for training.

By Kelly Foreman

Richmond, KY - The Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) is launching a new initiative that will allow basic training recruits to earn an associate's degree at no charge, helping boost recruitment for law enforcement agencies across the state.

The program, called Educating Heroes, lets recruits in the Law Enforcement Basic Training Academy simultaneously earn their degree as they complete their peace officer certification. It's the result of a new partnership between DOCJT and Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC).

Close to 300 recruits go through the academy every year on their way to becoming law enforcement officers.

KY World War II Sailor identified

Navy Machinist's Mate 1st Class Ulis C. Steely, of Corbin, was killed in action on Dec. 7, 1941

By Nicole Burton

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin today recognized the sacrifice of a Kentucky sailor who died in World War II, but whose remains have just been positively identified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) has announced that Navy Machinist's Mate 1st Class Ulis C. Steely, 25, of Corbin, Kentucky, was officially accounted for on Oct. 15, 2018.

On Dec. 7, 1941, Steely was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Steely.

Letter: Find and use a trash can

J. writes:
AMEN! It's not only the IGA parking lot. Have a look across the road too. However, sadly I do see too many yards that look like this and worse. I also see many toss their trash out their vehicle windows driving down the road! Pretty sad when I have a child in my car who gets angry when we see this and has more respect for personal and public property than many adults!! The cycle will continue too as those adults are teaching their young to not have any respect for their own or others property either. It's just sheer laziness and lack of morals that those doing this can't find and use a trash can. Or at least leave it in their own vehicles until they do. --J. (contact info on file)
