Letter: A picture is worth a thousand words

Sheila Wood writes:
What is the old saying? "A picture is worth a thousand words". These two precious children can show a lot of us just how our society should be. And using bananas for phones--perfect communication at its best. These two do not have a need for a cell phone they are using their imaginations.

Children need to grow and learn with imaginations. We are in a electronic world which has a place but children need to be children. Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo. --Sheila

Carol Perkins: Class reunion time

Previous column: Adventures in Italy, Part 4

By Carol Perkins

My class reunion is coming up in a few weeks. I hesitate to mention how many years because it is hard to believe. Fifty-five. I was a mere girl (a skinny one at that), who had no clue what she wanted to be, where she wanted to live, and only a hint of whom she might marry. This girl only knew that she was having the time of her life and didn't want it to end.

In thinking about past reunions, the first is usually the tenth and the focus often is who looks the youngest, been most "successful," who had the most children-in other words a contest of a sort. At every "first" reunion it is only natural to look for changes. Giving the prize to the one who has "changed the most" might not be a compliment! Giving a prize to the youngest looking one is a license to hurt someone's feelings. I learned this one year when I got no votes; not even Guy's! The first reunion requires rapid weight loss and a new outfit.

The second reunion is often the twenty-fifth and takes on a different tone.

Drive Sober Campaign Nets 347 DUI Arrests in 5 Days

By Trooper Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police reminded motorists today that they are continuing their enforcement efforts during the National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Since the effort began on August 16, 2019, there have been 347 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Arrests in Kentucky by law enforcement officers across the Commonwealth.

KSP Spokesperson Sergeant Josh Lawson says the focus of the campaign is saving lives.

"We aggressively watch for impaired drivers year-round, but when we join this effort with law enforcement agencies across the state it immediately becomes a force-multiplier to make our roads safer," said Lawson.

Lawson added that there have been 53 impaired driving crashes since August 16, 2019.

"It's unacceptable that in the first five days of the 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' Campaign that there have been that many crashes," noted Lawson. "With Labor Day soon approaching vacation travel will increase and we must keep these families safe on our roadways."

AG: Fake Deputy targeting teachers with scam

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Andy Beshear issued a scam alert to warn of a new scam targeting Kentucky school systems and teachers.

Beshear said his office has recently received multiple reports of a "Deputy Hart" calling schools asking to speak with a specific teacher who allegedly has an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty. School officials have been threatened with "obstruction charges" if the scammer is not given information or allowed to speak with the teacher. Once on the phone with the victim, the scammer requests payment via gift cards to resolve the legal matter and avoid arrest.
