CHFS resources at state fair

Public health, foster care and adoption, Medicaid services highlight CHFS resources at state fair

Frankfort, KY - Visitors to the Kentucky State Fair are encouraged to stop by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) exhibit. The booth will include a wide range of CHFS services including substance use disorder resources, mental health information, children and parents programs, and other health and family assistance initiatives. The fair opens Thursday, Aug. 15, and concludes Sunday, Aug. 25 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. The CHFS exhibit will be in the Health Horizons section of South Wing B.

Letter: Tear them down!

Tear down those wings! According to the powers that be the old windows are in storage and can be placed right back into the original openings which are now doors, I believe. This will get us back to the original courthouse that we can then restore. Additionally it will create a large amount of green space that can become great little downtown park. --BJF

KY Tourism: Increased Visitor Growth and Spending in 2018

Frankfort, KY - Visitor spending and visitation growth in Kentucky both increased in 2018 according to a study from Tourism Economics, the Kentucky Department of Tourism's new research partner. Visitor trips to and within the Commonwealth topped 71.6 million in 2018, with visitor spending climbing to nearly $7.6 billion, a 3.7 percent increase over the prior year and 21 percent increase since 2013.

"Tourism continues to play a vital role in Kentucky's economy," said Jay Hall, Acting Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Tourism.

A day of volunteer service being planned by City

"Be The Change," the City of Columbia movement for continuous improvement, is growing in the community and this is to announce a day of service to others is planned on September 21, 2019.

"We realize that people want to be involved in our community and help others," said Mayor Pamela Hoots. "We will be working with area church volunteers to have a day of service."

LWC Archery releases 2019-20 schedule

First-year Lindsey Wilson archery coach Mark Elam announced the 2019-20 Blue Raider schedule today.

In total eight events are on the docket for LWC this season including three Mid-South Conference Championships and three national championships for three different shooting disciplines.

The Lindsey Wilson season kicks off on Sept. 20 with the 3D regional's in Barbourville, Ky., before heading to Williamsburg, Ky., for the 3D MSC Championship. The championship is being hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.). Last season the Blue Raider finished in third place out of nine teams at the event.

Stuchell raising funds to publish book of poetry

Christopher Stuchell has set up a gofundme to help get funding to get his book of poetry, Incantations, published with Atmosphere Press.

Stuchell, the son of David Shelanskey and Judy Stuchell, is a 2019 graduate of Adair County High School, who plans to attend college to major in English and become a teacher.

Stuchell is passionate about poetry, and his original poems have already been published in Lindsey Wilson College's literary magazine, Orpheus, and on Columbia Magazine.

Chris writes, "I have lived in Columbia since 2011, and have grown to love it, and I recently graduated from Adair County High School. I would be extremely grateful for any contribution to this project. Please help me to accomplish this!"

Taylor Co. Fiscal Court awarded $676K by transportation cabinet

At Tuesday's Taylor County Fiscal Court meeting, Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid announced $676,207 in discretionary funds for vital resurfacing work on West Finley Road, Eastport Road, Raikes Hill Road and Moss Road. Resurfacing repairs address existing surface cracks, potholes and raveling.

Renewed roads will benefit residents of approximately 80 homes.

"The $676,000 we are receiving from the state will go a long way toward much-needed repairs," said House Majority Floor Leader John (Bam) Carney. "Resurfacing roads is a guaranteed way to extend the life of our roads, making them safer and smoother for the folks who travel on them. I appreciate the Transportation Cabinet's leadership in making Taylor County a priority. After all, what we don't maintain today, we will replace tomorrow."

Taylor County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for these projects.
