The Day of the Mantis

By Pen

Hailey wanted to play outside yesterday, and it was one of those perfect summer afternoons, with big puffy clouds interrupting bright blue skies, just hot enough that shade felt wonderful. So I settled in for a nap in the hammock while she set up the current cast of favorite dolls a few feet away in her playhouse.

When Hailey woke me to show me something that doll Lilly could do, I noticed a praying mantis on the eave of the playhouse and pointed it out.

Hailey has been excited about birdwatching lately, and adores the zoo, so I expected this bit of nature to catch her interest as well. Instead, she stopped everything to demand that I get rid of the bug.

Letter: Amazing idea if doable

Brody Blair writes:
I think burying the power lines on the Square is an amazing idea! The power lines are so ugly. I just don't have any idea how much this will cost and if it is doable. --Brody

Letter: Benefits of buried power lines

Richard Raines writes:
I know I'm not real smart about installation and upkeep of power lines, but even though it is going to be more expensive to INSTALL lines underground, and have their locations and depths clearly marked, wouldn't it save money in the long run by not having to worry about damage in ice storms or severe thunderstorms, or from falling trees, or big trucks pulling wires down when they go under it, or in the event of an auto accident where pole is hit?

When our house was built in 1988, we had power line (and telephone line) installed UNDERGROUND across the driveway for looks, and to prevent lines from being torn down by accident. We have never had a problem with that section of our power line, although the tree trimmers stay busy coming every couple of years to trim back limbs near the line that comes in to that point.

We obtain our water for household use from a spring near our house. County water runs nearby, but we wanted spring water. The power line to the spring for the pump is buried and we never have any problem with it either, just have to know where not to dig. --Richard

KHEAA: August Money Tip for college students

From KHEAA

If you're paying back federal student loans, be wary of sales pitches from companies that offer to help you lower your payments, warns the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Some companies charge high fees for filling out forms that you can do for free. Many will want to charge monthly fees for monitoring your loans. Again, you can do that for free.

The best place to start is the servicer that the U.S. Department of Education has assigned your loan to. Your servicer can tell you what your options are and can help you with the forms you need. If you need help finding your servicer, you can go to www.nslds.ed.gov and retrieve your loan information.

You can also go directly to www.ed.gov and click on the link titled "Student loans." Under that link you'll find links to detailed information about all of your options.
