ACSO: Fake calls are not from Sheriff's Office

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

Today we have received several phone calls from Adair County residents stating they have received fraudulent calls that appeared to be from Adair County Sheriff's Office.

These calls consist of people being told they have a summons or warrants on them that do not exist. The callers are using employees names of the Sheriff's Office. The number that is showing up on most of these calls is 270-290-1369. We believe they are using an app to change the outgoing number, and we are trying to track down the source at this time.

The Sheriffs Office will not ever call and ask you for personal information over the phone. We do not accept payment for fines over the phone by credit card, nor do we ask for them. We do not call and tell you we have a warrant and are on our way if you don't pay as we ask.

If you receive a call that appears to be from the Sheriff's Office, tell them that you'll call the Sheriff's Office back, and then dial 270-384-2776.

Indiana man charged in ongoing labor trafficking investigation

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Twelve minors taken into protective custody after a Bowling Green arrest in the multi-agency investigation. Floyd allegedly brought Indiana children to Kentucky to sell candy for him for profit and forced the 12 minors to sleep in one hotel room with three adults. The minors were forced to purchase their own meals and water.

Frankfort, KY -. (July 16, 2019) - Attorney General Andy Beshear announced today that an ongoing labor trafficking investigation involving multiple agencies has led to an Indiana man being charged in Bowling Green for endangering the welfare of 12 minors.

Shawn Floyd, 54, of Indianapolis, was charged by Beshear's office with 12 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, Class A misdemeanors, and one count of controlled substance prescription not in original container, a Class B misdemeanor.

Lexington police digging into 40 year old mystery

By Valarie Honeycutt Spears, Lexington Herald-Leader

Lexington police have renewed their search for the body of Melanie Flynn, a Lexington woman from a prominent family who has been missing since 1977 and whose disappearance has been one of the city's most enduring mysteries, Lt. Albert Johnson said. The people thought to be involved in her disappearance "had influence, they were powerful, there was money," said Johnson, who heads the homicide unit for Lexington police.

The case figured in a book called The Bluegrass Conspiracy: An Inside Story about Power, Greed, Drugs and Murder published nearly 30 years ago. It was also written about in a 1989 Herald-Leader series called "Birds of a Feather" about former local law enforcement officers and others in Central Kentucky who fell into the drug trade.

Lexington and Kentucky State Police officers were at Murphy's Landing on the banks of the Kentucky River in Mercer County last Friday searching for possible evidence in the Melanie Flynn case.

LWC Athletics boasts 20 NAIA Scholar Teams in 2018-19

By Chris Wells

Twenty Lindsey Wilson College athletic programs earned 2018-19 NAIA Scholar-Team honors, NAIA officials announced on Monday.

The 20 teams are a department record eclipsing the 16 scholar teams in 2013-14.

Since the inception of the award in 2006-07, 155 Lindsey Wilson teams have earned the national honor. Lindsey Wilson has had at least 10 NAIA Scholar Teams each of the last 10 years.

To be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, a team must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all student-athletes on the eligibility certificate.

Moon Landing movie screening and discussion series at WKU

By Tommy Newton

Saturday's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing, taking place at WKU's Hardin Planetarium, features screenings and discussions of excellent but rare Apollo 11 related films.

The event, which starts at 1pmCT and continues throughout the day on Saturday, July 20, 2019, will be held in the Ogden College Hall auditorium at the corner of State Street and 14th Avenue in Bowling Green. All movies are free to the public and discussion of each movie will follow its screening. It is not required that visitors attend every movie: people can drop in and out over the course of the day. Nearby parking is available free of charge.

The film Apollo 11 came to Nashville this March, including the IMAX screen, but never made it to Bowling Green. There will be one showing of Apollo 11 at 4:45pmCT on Saturday.

Apollo 11 consists of restored and rediscovered footage taken during preparation for the mission and on the trip itself, and provides a powerful sense of Apollo 11's mission from the Earth to the Moon and back again.

Richard Gelderman, Hardin Planetarium's director, was amazed at the emotion and excitement conveyed in this film. He noted as he sat in the audience that "we were all on the edge of our seats, even though we knew good and well how it was going to end."

"It felt a bit like time traveling back to 1969," said Ronn Kistler, Hardin Planetarium's coordinator, "especially with the soundtrack of communications between Mission Control and the crew."
