2019-07-06 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
These Black Vultures were hesitant to leave the road where they had found fresh road kill brunch Saturday morning in the Christine community. When they finally did fly off, they circled to go right back as soon as the car was out of their way.

Letter: About Hummingbird Moths

A reader writes in with more on the Hummingbird Moth:

The term "hummingbird moth" is applied to many medium to large moths in the Sphingidae family and Hemaris genus of moths. There are more than 1,200 species of these moths worldwide, and roughly 125 of them can be seen regularly in North America. These insects are also called hawk moths, sphinx moths, clearwing moths, bee moths, and bee-hawk moths, and in the caterpillar stage, they are called hornworms.

Letter: Parker Hardin Jackman

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Thanks for bringing attention to the site of the Jackman School, an historic Rosenwald School. I regret that when I wrote the information for the landscape plaque I did not get the name correct. It should read: Parker Hardin Jackman, not P. Hiram as was the name in the library files, where I got the information.

When there was publicity regarding Rosenwald Schools in the Courier-Journal, I contacted Byron Crawford about our Jackman Rosenwald School. He wrote a great article. It was read by Jackman's great granddaughter, who corrected the name - too late though to change the name on the plaque.

Jackman left a legacy as an educator. Although born into slavery, he had been taught to read and knew the importance of that skill. So he taught others who then became teachers. He died before the Jackman School was built, but it was named in his honor. Too bad, he never got to see it.

A framed photo of Jackman and his brother is hanging in the Trabue-Russell House. --Vonnie

Free books at Auntie's Craft Corner

By Veronica Klinglesmith

Auntie's Craft Corner at Farmers Market on the Square has started a new program this year to offer free books to help promote reading during the market season. All books are donated, and you can find board books all the way up to high school. Students are welcome to come pick out a book, then keep it or pass it on to another.

We have been so blessed with donations, that I've been rotating what is available every week. So if you don't find what your are looking for, let us know and we can keep an eye out for it.
