Camp Casey Summer Program 2019

By Dana Harmon, 21st CCLC Director

Learning has continued this summer at Adair County Primary Center. For the entire month of June, the 21st CCLC and Family Resource Center at Adair County Primary Center has hosted the Camp Casey Summer Program. Research shows that students lose about 2 months of math skills and 2 months of reading skills during the summer break from school.

Over the course of their elementary education this adds up to the point that by the time a child reaches middle school they may be 2 to 3 years behind. It's important to continue reading, practicing skills and continuing to learn during school breaks to prevent the "summer slide".

We are fortunate that our school has a 21st CCLC grant and wonderful partners to provide continued learning opportunities in out of school time.

Keep Food Safe for July 4th Celebrations

By Christina Dettman/Barbara Fox

Frankfort, KY - The Fourth of July holiday offers opportunities for outdoor fun with family and friends. However, these warm weather events also present opportunities for foodborne bacteria to thrive. As food heats up in summer temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly. To protect yourself, your family, and friends from foodborne illness during warm-weather months, safe food handling when eating outdoors is critical.

Remember to pack and transport food safely and to keep cold food cold. Place cold food in a cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Cold food should be stored at 40* F or below to prevent bacterial growth. Meat, poultry, and seafood may be packed while still frozen so that they stay colder longer. Organize cooler contents and consider packing beverages in one cooler and perishable foods in another. That way, as picnickers open and reopen the beverage cooler to replenish their drinks, the perishable foods will not be exposed to warm outdoor air temperatures. Keep coolers closed and once at the picnic site, limit the number of times the cooler is opened as much as you can to help keep the contents cold longer.

Letter: Brody Blair responds to 'where's the gap?'

Brody Blair writes:
When will the road be finished? Also, are there any corporations intending on locating in Columbia when the road is completed? --Brody
Comments re photo 83901 Wheres the gap what does Adair need to do for job When is the Industrial Park Road going to be finished

Brody, thank you for writing and questioning how money is spent in your hometown and what the plans are. And thank you for responding to Bobby Morrison's question, "where's the gap?" What a good question to get us thinking about where the needs are for bringing more jobs to Adair County, right?

This road in the Green River Industrial Park is meant to attract businesses looking at towns like ours in which they might locate. The Economic Development Authority of Adair County, led by Mark Dykes, believes the road will help jobs recruitment efforts when they can show visitors the available lots on a road that does not end up in a mud puddle.

You and any of your fellow students would be welcome at the every third Tuesday monthly public EDA meetings where the road is in the planning stages now. The meetings are at 8amCT in the Chamber of Commerce building, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia. - Linda Waggener

Baseball in the way-back

By Mike Watson

Baseball became popular during the Civil War era and our interest has never waned. There was a time when every community in Adair County fielded a team. Teams traveled to play, and occasionally played out-of-the-county teams in surrounding areas. This popularity continued into the 1950s. Perhaps television, easier modes of travel, and other entertainment caused the decline in local teams.

Here is a short item from the Adair County News, September 7, 1898:
"The Gradyville second nine baseball team played the Breeding team last Sunday afternoon. The score was 19 to 3 in favor of Gradyville. The Breeding boys should practice up before they send us another challenge." --Gradyville correspondent to the News
Does any reader have photographs of an old ball team they'd share with us on ColumbiaMagazine? --MW
