Death cleaning - or just cleaning for a simpler, uncluttered life

10 Things that should be thrown away now - the idea in the book featured below on Swedish 'Death Cleaning' is to live in a house that is cleared of clutter. All this month of April, we are proclaimed and motivated to clean up the environment - and traditionally we 'spring clean' at this time of year. Yesterday we had the story of Mike and Laura Harris as they experienced downsizing from a 6,000 square foot house in the country to a home on the upper floor on the Public Square in Columbia. Today, this article shares how to get started on lightening up.

The Swedish have a solution and it starts long before a person starts feeling unable to downsize. They call it, somewhat unpleasantly, 'death cleaning.' But the project is really about preparing to live simply.

Author Maggie Magnusson divides the cleaning into categories of rooms and things, like clothing and books. She points out that this makes it easier for those left behind - but it also makes daily living easier.

Letter: math was correct under keepsake flood picture

Darryl Smith writes:
Actually, Mr. Wilson's math is spot on (rounding up a cubic foot of water to 7.5 gallons from the actual 7.48052, that is):

60,000 cf/s X 7.5 = 450,000 gallons/second. Multiply that by the 60 seconds in a minute, and you get 27,000,000 gallons/minute.

Now, take that number and multiply it by the 1440 seconds in a 24-hour day and you get... 38,880,000,000.

The caption is correct as written. --Darryl
