Poetry by Robert Stone: Day before

No day before is known as day before
until the day has shown its happenings.
It is that thing that we cannot ignore
that in our future, joy or sadness brings.

No year is just the way we would it were
for life too easily upends our goals.
It is the chance that options will recur
that in pursuits our hopefulness controls.

No life mature is what life young could see
for things will come that had no being then.
It is that force sustaining little wren
that in the wild escapes again, again.

No past or present is entirely lost
though bits and pieces constantly are tossed.
A sonnet for friends now gone, written on the fourth anniversary of a loss
