Daniel Trabue speaks to Columbia Chamber of Commerce

By Linda Waggener

Richard Phelps received a standing ovation for his portrayal of Daniel Trabue, one of the founding fathers of Columbia KY, at the March chamber of commerce luncheon.

On March 30, 1760, Daniel Trabue was born in Chesterfield, Virginia after his family came to this country - French Heugonots fleeing at a time of great persecution - he heard great things about Kentucky from an older brother and determined to make the journey when he grew up.

Phelps, speaking as Daniel Trabue, tells his story:

Spoofing bill awaits Governor's signature

By Jack Brammer, Lexington Herald-Leader

Kentucky lawmakers hope a bill they approved Wednesday will stop the annoying telemarketing practice of "spoofing," which makes calls appear as though they're coming from a local phone number.

House Bill 84, sponsored by Rep. Kevin Bratcher, R-Louisville, requires that telephone solicitors either list their true phone number or leave it as unknown. It now awaits a signature or veto by Gov. Matt Bevin.

ONE TANK DAY TRIPPERS - find Forest Giants

By Tiffany Kessler

Our little family of three loves to take "One Tank Day Trips".

The Commonwealth is chocked full of amazing locations, some already popular and others well off the beaten path.

Most of the time we end up on a spontaneous drive to an accidental destination but, regardless of the route, there are a few guidelines: 1) It has to be fun/interesting; 2) Like most folks we're on a budget, so typically we look for inexpensive spots; 3) If we're going to travel, we pack the day with all we can find; and finally 4) BONUS POINTS for anyplace super unusual and/or educational.

Letter: More on feeding birds. And squirrels

Bill Parson writes:
Short answer to the bird feeding question. YES? They love them, I buy the meal worm cake at Lowe's, they also have a cage feeder that holds the cake. The ONLY problem I see with meal worms is the SQUIRRELS love them too. I have 4 squirrels and they stayed full of the birds meal worms until I found a way to keep them off the cage. I have 16 different species of birds and the only one I have NOT seen on the meal worms is the Mourning Dove.

In looking at your picture (hard to tell) but I see two male Cardinals, one female Cardinal, what appears to be the back of a BlueJay, and the two smaller birds on the feeder appear to be Pine Siskens. Pine Siskens are marked somewhat like Goldfinches, but instead of a very bright Yellow plumage, theirs is a drab olive green. Their wings have the black stripping like the Goldfinch. --Bill

Letter: Is politics all about perspective?

Robert L Johnson writes:
If you enjoy sports, I'll venture to guess that you enjoy watching UK or Louisville basketball. Both coaches are state employees and earn 9 million and 4 million respectively. Do you share the same indignation for their extreme salaries, or is it just reserved for "friends" of the sitting governor? I guess politics is all about one's perspective. --Robert

Letter: On feeding birds

Larry Clark writes:
I used to have to buy separate bags of mealworms, and mix them in other songbird food. Walmart now has a nice mix with mealworms.

The Carolina wrens have raised their young around here for years, sometimes in the odest places. Like one time in a nail box, another time in a broken flowerpot. They are a resourceful little bird looking for bugs under tree bark or around the edge of the roof, sometimes turning upside down. I have seem them climb up the guide wires on the transmission lines with no trouble at all. They fuss saying, what some folks say sounds like "cheater, cheater, cheater." I love them. --Larry
