The first snow of the New Year - a collection of photos

By Linda Waggener

Our first snow of the New Year was anxiously anticipated because a huge southward heading storm from the north was in the news all last week - rightly advising we be prepared. Mid-week forecasters were talking about the possibility of up to four inches of snow, even here in south central Kentucky.

By Friday, predictions were lowered to an inch or two, or a dusting of snow, depending on which county you were in, more to the north or more to the south.

What we got in Adair County was maybe an inch. It was beautiful to wake to early this morning, and by mid-afternoon today, Sunday, January 20, 2019, it's melting in the full sunshine.

Mid-Jan 1919: Veterans returning home

But meanwhile, back in The Shire...

By Jim

A fair amount of war related news still graced the pages of the January 22, 1919 paper. Noel Thomas, "who was several times wounded on the Hindenburg Line" in late September, finally had arrived home in Adair County after a lengthy hospital stay. His worst injuries came about ten minutes after he saw fellow Adair Countian Deed Smith fall just a few feet away.
