Reed takes first at heavyweight wrestling for LWC

Marshall, MO - The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team finished in second place out of 41 teams at the Missouri Valley Invite while Brandon Reed claimed first place in the heavyweight class. In total eight Blue Raiders placed inside the top-8 of their respective weight classes.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Friday, January 25, 2019, when they take on Midway at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY, at 7pmCT.


Reed (No. 1 at heavyweight) went a perfect 6-0 for the tournament as he won the one match via pin, one by technical fall, two by major decision and two via decisions across the two day competition. The sophomore opened his day with a 8-0 major decision victory over Bryson McGowan (No. 7 at HW) of Oklahoma City in the semifinals and ended his run with a pin in the championship match against Ethan Bunce (No. 16 at HW) of Marian (Ind.), doing so just 1:14 into the bout.

Brady Moser (No. 15 at 133) finished his weekend in second place after starting his day with a 7-4 decision victory over D'earion Stokes of Briar Cliff (Iowa) on a close 7-4 decision in the semifinals. In the championship match Moser would fall on a 3-1 decision to Dante Tacchia of Grandview (Iowa).

Trent Johnson (No. 5 at 141) fell in his semifinal matchup of the championship bracket to Eric Clarke (No. 3 at 141) of Grandview (Iowa) to fall to the consolation bracket. In his next matchup against Grayson Brenna of Grandview he won during the first sudden victory period on a 6-2 decision to advance to the third place title match. Johnson would win on a 6-3 decision over Nickalas Henneman of Lourdes to close out his tournament.

After falling to the consolation bracket in the last match of his first day of competition Latrell Davis strung together four straight victories on day two to finish the tournament in third place of the 149-pound class. He opened his day with pin against Dakota Drenth of Morningside (Iowa) in 2:44 before picking up back-to-back decision victories over Garrett Carter of Lourdes and Devin Everk of Menlo (Calif.) to advance to the third place title match. There, Davis won a tight 6-4 decision in overtime against Colby Johnson of Baker (Kan.)

Mark Taijeron took fifth place and Derrick Smallwood (No. 8 at 157) took sixth place after they both met in the 157-pound fifth place match. Taijeron earned the fifth place nod when Smallwood was forced to medically forfeit the match. Smallwood wrestled his way to the championship bracket semifinals during day one of the competition but was unable to compete on day two due to injury.

Taijeron opened his day with a pin over Kyle Fowler of Morningside (Iowa) in 4:28 before defeating Justin George of Reinhardt (Ga.) on a high scoring 11-9 decision. He fell in the consolation semifinals to Steven Lawrence (No. 4 at 157) of Grandview (Iowa) during his next match.

Brett Bradford (No. 10 at 174) fell in the championship bracket semifinals to open his day against Lucas Lovvorn (No. 1 at 174) on a 7-3 decision before turning in two straight victories to finish in third place. Bradford pinned Jonathan Stewart (No. 18 at 174) of Williams Baptist to the mat in 4:10 before ending his day with a 9-2 decision over Vincent Chace (No. 8 at 174) of Oklahoma City.

Avery Buckman (No. 13 at 197) won by fall over Caleb Deemer (Morningside (Iowa) in just 12 seconds to open his day and the advanced by medical forfeit over Terry Martin of Missouri Valley. Buckman then fell to Bruce Valdez of Menlo (Calif.) and would take eight place after he lost to Riley Williams of Wayland Baptist (Texas) in his final match.
