Forgotten People

Consider this a call for everyone to observe and remember, and to record, in as much detail as possible, knowledge of their family members and friends, so the lives of forgotten people will be more than a single entry on a line on a census report...

By Joyce M. Coomer

Throughout the year I send out several dozen greeting cards. This past Christmas, I noticed that more than a few people were absent from my mailing list. Some were my family members, some were Greg's family members, and some were old friends.

How well did I know these people? A few, very well. Others, fairly well. And others, when I stopped to think about it, just barely, even though I had known them as long as I could remember.

As a child, like a lot of children, while I was around adults, I didn't always pay close attention to what they were talking about.

Cold or Flu? Here are some thoughts for surviving both

For your cold, recent studies suggest that chicken soup may indeed degrade its symptoms. Nobody really knows why, but the evidence implies this time-honored remedy helps subdue inflammation. If the flu strikes, stay home except for doctor visits, you're sick and highly contagious... Drink plenty of fluids for both the flu or a cold. Fluids hydrate your respiratory system and convert thick mucus into a liquid you can spit out.

Is it a "Cold" or is it "Flu"? Knowing the difference and what to do can save you. Flu is an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses A or B. While most people who get the flu recover in a week or two, others can develop severe and potentially life-threatening complications.

Stivers: How much is spent lobbying KY's executive branch?

By Jack Brammer, Lexington Herald-Leader

Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers said he was "blown away" by revelations in two recent high-profiled public corruptions cases that revealed lax oversight of those who lobby the state's executive branch of government.

"What a lot of people don't know is that individuals lobby the executive branch just as they lobby the legislative branch," said Stivers in a floor speech during the first week of this year's law-making session. "But the requirements for reporting your fees as you lobby the executive branch are virtually non-existent and nowhere as stringent as that we require for lobbying us."

Stivers, R-Manchester, has filed a bill to give the public more information about lobbyists of the state's executive branch.

Nelson Co. tourists face federal fine for abusing Tybee turtles

By Mandy Matney, Lexington Herald-Leader

Last summer, tourists from Kentucky sparked Internet outrage when they admittedly took six baby sea turtles from a Tybee Island beach and placed the threatened animals in a hotel trash can. A housekeeper at the Admiral's Inn found the loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings in a water-filled bin and then contacted police on July 24, according to a Tybee Island police report.

Five months later, Danielle Tosh, 24, and Michael House, 42, both from Nelson County, have been fined $930 each in connection with the incident, according to Barry Paschal, public affairs officer at the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.

New international student orientation

by Sabine Eastham, Director of the International Student Programs

International students gathered at the International Student Programs (ISP) House on Lindsey Wilson Street on Wednesday for their new student orientation. Bryson Jones, Assistant Director of ISP, conducted a fun icebreaker activity. To start, students wrote three to five facts about themselves on a piece of paper. Then they put their creativity to work by folding that paper into a paper airplane. On Bryson's count, everyone flew their planes toward the middle of the room. Then students picked up a plane that landed near them and took turns reading the facts written on the plane and trying to guess whose it was.
