Seasonal confusation

2018-10-18 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen.
We've been watching the trees closely for signs of fall colors, and some of the maples have been hinting at yellows and oranges. However, what we haven't been expecting is pink. Apparently, the recent high temperatures and rains tricked this crabapple into an October bloom, even after it had dropped most of its leaves for the year.

KY Afield Outdoors: 2018 Deer Season Update

Youth hunters post good results with early muzzleloader season on deck. Many changes to hunting regulations will affect nearly all hunters.

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Many deer hunters rejoiced this past weekend over a break in a weather pattern that had been alternating between stifling heat and soaking rains.

A cool down coincided with the two-day gun season for youth deer hunters. It also excited archery and crossbow hunters getting into the woods, blinds and tree stands.

"It wasn't really fit to do much but go hunting," said Gabe Jenkins, deer and elk program coordinator with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We saw good participation over the weekend."

Carol Perkins: The forgotten joys of the Sears catalog

Previously by Carol: Carol Perkins: Job search in the modern economy

By Carol Perkins

When the Sears Christmas catalog arrived, I quickly flipped through the pages straight to the toys and then spent hours pondering what I hoped Santa would bring. The most exciting preface to Christmas was its arrival, although I never knew my parents to order anything from a catalog. That didn't keep me from hoping Santa would have the same catalog directly from Sears that I had.

My great uncle often told stories about carrying the mail by horseback and dreading the arrival of the Sears catalogs each season.

20 years later, McCreary family still looking for answers

By Greg Bird, McCreary County Voice
Read the full story at themccrearyvoice.com

Twenty years ago a 15-year old McCreary County girl went missing, and her family has never been the same. Crystal Marler's life was cut short when she abruptly disappeared on Oct. 8, 1998.

She has been gone now, longer than she had been alive, but her family still holds hope that the person, or persons who took her from them will face justice, and perhaps bring a little piece of closure to the deeply troubling ordeal.

In 2009, more than a decade after Crystal's disappearance, hunters stumbled across skeletal remains off a Forest Service road near Peel Dogwood Road, bringing fresh life in to the investigation. The State Medical Examiner's Office positively identified the remains as Marler's and determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma and a gunshot. Further evidence was collected at the scene, but little more learned about the case at the time.
