Downtown Days: weather invited layers, coats and boots

2018-10-15 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Jane Stailey loved two things about the festival in Columbia over the weekend - cotton candy in all her favorite flavors and weather cool enough to allow her to wear her snuggly boots.

Celia Downey: Fence Row Possum

By Celia Downey

A whispered voice awakened me in the wee hours of the morning at about 0200. I could hear the urgency in his voice. Alerting from a sound sleep, I instantly knew the little voice from the dark was that of Jack, Jack Russell Terrier. Turning to check Jack, I saw him in the shadows, at full attention, poised on the floor, staring up at me with head cocked to the right. Our eyes locked. Jack laid back his ears, I laid back my ears. A 911 situation in the making.

"GOOD GRIEF and what is your problem at this time of morning?" I grimaced through thin lips.

Abe Lincoln's Law Partner Comes to Homeplace

Space is limited, and ticket information and reservations for both performances can be made by calling or e-mailing Phil Hanna at (270) 384-2894 or cphanna51@msn.com.

By George Kolbenschlag

The fifth show in this season's Homeplace on Green River's Shakespeare in the Barn series will be November 3 when veteran actor Robert Brock brings Abe Lincoln's law partner, Billy Herndon, who was born in Green County, back to life in his stage presentation of One Man's Lincoln.

Herndon probably knew Lincoln better than anyone else. In addition to their strong friendship, he was Lincoln's law partner for 18 years. His biography of the 16th president paints a convincing and passionate portrait of Lincoln. In One Man's Lincoln, Robert Brock presents Billy Herndon in all his irascibility as he shares Herndon's story of a severely divided nation that was held together by the vision and will of an extraordinary, dignified, fierce and gentle man.

When Lincoln left for the White House he told Herndon not to remove his name from the shingle hanging on the door because he would be back. As we all know, that was not to be.

Health Day at ACES

By Alice Curry

Regular classes were cancelled at Adair County Elementary School on Friday, October 5th. Instead of studying math, reading and science, students learned about CPR, how the heart works and why sleeping nine hours a night is important. These lessons were all part of the annual Health and Fitness Day, a unique event that provides an opportunity for all ACES students to participate in a day full of health and fitness promotion, education and exploration.

Some of the activities included riding a "blender bike" to make a fruit smoothie, physical education games, discussing the effects of drugs on health and learning why it is important to take care of your teeth.

Nearly 60 volunteers from the community, Lindsey Wilson College and Adair County High School visited the school to share health, fitness, and nutrition activities with students. The event was sponsored by The Family Resource Center, ACES Physical Education Department and Leadership Day coordinators.

Mike Watson shares the History of Casey Creek Post Office

Historian Mike Watson sends this wonderful History of Casey Creek Post Office written by Mr. M.V. Wolford, the oldest rural letter carrier in Adair County when he retired from service at the Casey Creek post office on July 31, 1957. He had spent nearly thirty years carrying the mail. After such an active life, Mr. Wolford found it difficult to just 'loaf' and decided to write about his many experiences and tell something of the postal history of the Casey Creek Post Office. He chronicled his experiences in columns for the Adair County News, beginning 4 December 1957.

"Brief History of Casey Creek Post Office and R.F.D. Services in Adair County"
by Mr. M.V. Wolford, 1957

The oldest rural letter carrier in Adair County retired from service on July 31, 1957 from Casey Creek Post Office, after 29 years, five months and fourteen days service in which he had traveled approximately 211,000 miles delivering mail during cold or hot days, rain, sleet, snow, mud, high waters and what have you.
