Educational meeting about alpha-gal syndrome 9 Oct 2018 By Nick Roy A growing number of Adair County citizens have been diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome, a food allergy to red meat. Alpha-gal is most usually a result of being bitten by a Lone Star tick which is often found in Adair County. In areas of the country where lone star ticks are common, up to 20% of the people have tested positive for this antibody. This can trigger a mild to severe immune system reaction when they eat red meat. There is no treatment other than avoiding red meat. As the number of cases have grown in Adair County, it becomes more important that citizens and health care professionals become more familiar with the threats posed by Lone Star ticks and common symptoms observed as a result of their bite. To bring awareness of Lone Star ticks and alpha-gal, an educational meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 9th at 6pmCT at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground St., Columbia, KY. KY SWCC awards $6Mil to Kentucky Farms The Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission Awards $6 Million in Tobacco Settlement Funds to Kentucky Farms By John Mura/Lanny Brannock Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission has selected 944 projects that protect water quality and prevent soil erosion on Kentucky farms to receive $6 million in tobacco settlement funds, the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet announced today. The awards ranged from $257 to $20,000. The average award was for $6,172, with the state reimbursing 75 percent of each project's cost and the landowner providing a 25 percent match. Nick Hale Adair Co, KY - On September 21st, 2018 at approximately 7:19pmET, Trooper Nick Davis served an indictment warrant 1.5 miles west of Dunnville on Cundiff Road, on 36 year old Joshua Gayde of Dunnville. Following a thorough investigation Trooper Nick Davis presented the case to the Adair County Grand Jury resulting in an indictment being returned on Gayde for Rape, 1st degree- victim < 12 years of age and sexual abuse, 1st degree, victim under 12 years of age. Farm Safety Day at the Adair County Primary Center By Laura Marcum Every year in the U.S., Kentucky, and even in Adair County there are youth that are injured or even killed in home or farming accidents. Every year farming ranks first or second in the most dangerous jobs. Now, more and more, young people are having to help out on the farm and at home and this will increase the chances of a young person getting injured. A Progressive Farmer Safety Day was planned for all 1st grade students at ACPC. On September 18, 2018, The Adair County Extension Service and the Adair County School System in conjunction with Progressive Agriculture Foundation hosted this event. It took place at the Adair FFA Barn on the High School Campus. Through hands-on activities, participants learned how to prevent farm and home accidents and how to reduce the extent of injuries if accidents do occur. Topics of the day included safety on or around tractors, livestock, and ATVs. Scheduled speakers and interactive demonstrations reinforced the importance of children taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends. Mrs. Godsey's 4th Grade Science Class Creates Mechanimals By Alice Curry Technology Teacher & STC, Adair County Elementary School After listening to the book Mechanimals, students created a model of animal using scrap materials. Their animal had to include at least some metal, and had to be able to meet its basic survival needs (food, shelter, oxygen, shelter.) This was the culminating assessment for our study of organism structure/function. They had a week to work on it at home, and one day to work at school. CHFS: Make a plan for your pets in case of emergency By Barbara Fox/Beth Fisher The Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), has launched First 72 Are On You information campaign during the month of September - National Preparedness Month (NPM), to increase emergency preparedness efforts for Kentuckians and their families. This week's spotlight is on preparing household pets and animals for disasters and emergencies. "If you are like the many animal owners in Kentucky today, your pet is an important member of your household and the best way to protect your pet from the stress and disruption of an emergency is to have a disaster pet kit and a plan that includes whether you will stay at home or evacuate during an emergency event," said Dr. Kelly Giesbrecht, state veterinarian for public health. "Being ready increases the likelihood of survival for all involved and reduces stress and worry for both pets and their owners."
