Robert Cumming: August fogs/winter storm connection

The Old Timers were right

Robert Cumming writes:
I've been hearing those August fog-winter storm connection stories for years ever since I was a kid. The old timers were right! Every day of August fog foretold a later blizzard the following winter. I particularly remember the August fogs in the summers of 77-78 and those record setting blizzards the next winter seasons. - Robert Cumming

Carol Perkins: Just winging it

Their highly successful radio show is called Susan & Carol Unscripted, so winging it for a homemakers gathered appeared to be a good idea . . . and it give the idea for a new YouTube series.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Give child time to play after school

By Carol Perkins

Susan Chambers and I were guest speakers at the Barren County Homemakers meeting last week and had a fantastic meal. We also met so many new ladies to add to our circle. Six months ago when Barbara Kidd (a fellow Metcalfe County Teacher) asked us to entertain, Susan called me to see what I thought. "This will be six months off so why not?" That would give us time to come up with a program/skit.

When former Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton tries to sum up the legislative impact of Rep. Jody Richards' 43 years in office, he finds it hard to put into words.

"It's just hard to summarize what a tremendous impact he's had," Patton told the Daily News. Patton was one of several guests speaking Saturday night at a retirement dinner for Richards at the National Corvette Museum. Others included Kentucky Chief Justice John Minton Jr., House Democratic leader Rocky Adkins, Attorney General Andy Beshear and Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

After he announced his retirement in January, Richards told the Daily News in April that he never imagined being a public servant for four decades.

After assuming office in 1976, he's gone on to become one of the most prolific state lawmakers in the country. An analysis from FiscalNote, a D.C.-based tech startup, named him as the third most productive state representative, with at least 1,100 sponsored and a 57 percent bill passage success rate.

Fog is a factor this morning: Larry Smith 10th Fog of August

By Larry Smith, Gen Manager, The Big Dawg, FM 99.9 radio

Fog is a factor this morning. From my vantage point at 101 N Main, I can see fairly clearly up and down Main Street, but looking south on Columbia Avenue, toward the lake, fog is as thick as a brick. Visibility is less and a quarter mile.

For the record, this is the Fog No. 10 for the month of August. That portends many snow days this coming winter. And this morning is only the 14th day of the month.

If you commuting to or from Columbia, give yourself a little extra time, especially around Green River Lake. - Larry Smith
