Comment on discussion of funeral homes selling alcohol Comment on Phil's comment: Thank you, Phil. Your information makes the subject of getting the license to sell alcohol in the Indiana funeral home much more understandable. Here, however, with the City's brand new ordinance in progress, I believe there'd have to be a deceased in the house, else opening the funeral home's bar to the public would be illegal. (This is subject to City Attorney Marshall Loy's clarification until the last day of his retirement in progress, and after that, and if the local funeral homes were to get licensed, it will become a question for new City Attorney Dustin Warren.) --Linda WaggenerComments re article 94457 Phil Hanna Southern Indianas German background a factor 2017-12-13 14:46:23 | Comments | Printable version

Phil Hanna: Southern Indiana's German background a factor . . . . . . in attitude there to serve alcohol at funeral homes Phil Hanna writes: I worked in southern Indiana for 17 years and one of the things you learn is that southern Indiana was settled by many German immigrants, Catholic and probably Lutheran. There is a different attitude towards alcohol in those cultural traditions that I suspect contributed to the decision to serve alcohol at the funeral home. I'd appreciate hearing any other thoughts on this. - Phil HannaComments re article 94444 Word a link from Anonymous a few days ago 2017-12-13 12:28:05 | Comments | Printable version

With some embarrassment, being the purveyor of the Great Wooded South Lexicon and all, I embarked upon an internet dictionary search. I promised myself that once I discovered the definition, I would fess up, so to speak, by announcing to the world that I was somewhat ignorant of this word and its usage. Word & a link from 'Anonymous' a few days ago By Ed Waggener Based on a letter from 'Anonymous,' an expat now living in the Midwest, where such seems to be ho-hum An ever-so-shy reader sent a link a few days ago about a development for times of bereavement and remembrance, with a link to this story/video/with pictures from Jeffersonville, Indiana, by Chris Sutter: Southern Indiana Funeral Home Now Serving up Alcohol for Services. It was posted: Dec 11, 2017 4:36pmCT and updated: Dec 11, 2017. The reader wonders if anything like this is offered in Kentucky? If it can be? Should be? And where, the reader wonders, would it mostly be pioneered? The writer reports that when the news was shared with a well-travelled, erudite man of the world colleague, his response was a meticulously punctuated: "Wha . . . I say, 'what!?!?!" Didn't know how to properly interpret that comment. 2017-12-13 06:43:30 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

The Whitehurst Diaries: A Sighting At Dusk 'For each time that we notice the deer making their light-footed way down the hillside, there are doubtless many more when their quiet visitation is unseen.' - Sharon Whitehurst Click on headline for complete essay By Sharon Whitehurst The doe moved, a dainty side-stepping at the moment I lifted my eyes to the window. My hands stilled, the slicing of tomatoes and a yellow pepper halted as I scanned the rapidly darkening woods beyond the stable, expecting to see several other deer move gracefully down the steep hill. The little band of deer, usually a group of four or five, are a familiar presence, often seen crossing through the scrubby saplings beyond the retaining wall or picking their way along the dry stream bed behind the workshop.
