Hunter Durham has theory on half-century old unsolved 'crime'

Humor: Famed attorney/detective may have 'connected the dots' in the writings of Dr. Billy K. Neat and Pete Walker and solved a major mostly fictional mystery of some 50 years ago.

Hunter Durham Writes:
Great story. I remember seeing it before. Just after this story, Dr. Billy K. Neat & Pete Walker had stories about a varmint which was seen by several (none of whom you could believe) and someone saw the varmint (CM note: the varmint, according to Dr.Neat was a grave robber, known as Ol' Rob) with a hoe that was said to belong to Cotton Durham. However, several witnesses said Cotton never owned a hoe nor would he know how to use it. It may have been the lost hoe from the earlier story about Dolphus' stolen hoe. Ol' Rob might have done it. --Hunter Durham

Humor: Case of missing hoe baffled police, crime reporter

HUMOR, with a hint of truth. A favorite story from Donna Marcum White's memorabilia. The story is from a file of unsolved mystery cases, from ca 50 years ago, as written in the unique - and a bit fanciful - outlook of the greatest 'crime' reporter of the age, the late Pete Walker

By Pete Walker, with the probable help of all named
Waggener-Walker Newspapers Crime Reporter, before or just after 1970

An unusual theft took place on Greensburg Street last week. Mr. Dolphus Dowell, renown gardener and resident of that street, left his garden to run downtown for more seed.

While he was gone for about 10 minutes, an ambitious thief stole his gooseneck hoe.

CW3 Doug Nobles historic Memorial Day speech text

It's was a VFW Memorial Day service which gave a last opportunity for Adair Countians to bid farewell to the old VFW Hall at 411 Fairground Street. It wasn't expected to be so big, but it was on an absolutely glorious Sunday afternoon, 29 May 2017. Nor was the crowd expected to be so large, but it was. Almost every seat in the hall was filled. The speaker, CW3 Doug Nobles, husband of Laura Nobles, and son of Billy Nobles and grandson of Louise & Tommy Nobles, filled in at a late moment on his leave from duty at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, and delivered as eloquent an address as any in memory. He graciously shares the written text from that addess here:

By CW3 Doug Nobles

It is an honor to be here today with so many of my fellow Americans who understand that freedom has a cost.

While we mourn the many losses today of those who gave that ultimate sacrifice, there is no doubt that many of us as Americans share a proud heritage of duty and honor built throughout history forged in the heat of past and present battles.

Poetry by Robert Stone - Lost in luckless life

Lost in luckless life : a sonnet asking why
by Robert Stone
Why are the wicked beautiful and proud
entirely edged by their attractiveness,
never denying yet never aloud
demanding daily pliant acquiesce?

Even most earnestly devoted, quake,
living in limbo, lost in luckless life,
confused by compliments profuse but fake
offered with oath, façade concealing strife.

Many unmerited descriptions show
previous prisoners yet unaware,
entangled early in passion aglow,
riding and roped to untiring despair.

Riddles are reasons hidden in plain words
yielding to younglings who can soar like birds.
~ Robert Stone, 29 May 2017
