Lifting History: Why it's time to end the Cuban trade embargo

I am now strongly supportive of lifting the embargo, or the "blockade" as the Cubans call it, and intend on making it a major legislative priority of mine in the 115th Congress. - REP. JAMES COMER.

By Rep. James Comer, R-KY
Commentary

I recently traveled to Havana, Cuba as part of a five-member Congressional team on a trade mission to begin talks to lift the United States embargo against Cuba. As a farmer, former Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, and representative of a large agricultural district, I was supportive of reopening trade with Cuba long before I ever actually visited Cuba. After spending five days meeting with Cuban government officials, small business owners, and various Cuban citizens, I am now strongly supportive of lifting the embargo, or the "blockade" as the Cubans call it, and intend on making it a major legislative priority of mine in the 115th Congress.

JIM: Elder Williams & the aeroplane: 'It sure was a grand sight.'

The wonder Elder Williams wrote of, of seeing an airplane fly for the first time in his life, he could now see any day at the twin cities Esto/Montpelier International, aka Russell County Airport just a few miles from his birthplace - just 100 years after his thrilling experience in Belton, Bell County, TX

By JIM

In the forepart of 1917, Eld. Z.T. Williams and his esteemed wife Mary spent several weeks in Belton, Bell County, Texas (60 miles north-northeast of Austin), visiting his son Lawrence and several other Adair Countians who had "gone thataway" to Texas.

As was his wont when away from Adair County, Eld. Williams sent a series of letters to the local newspaper, missives in which he spoke of long ago friends he'd seen, the weather, crops, road conditions, price of land, schools, and whatever else that might have drawn his attention as a merchant, farmer, minister, teacher, and generally well-read man.

Carol Perkins: The swimming pool story

Solution to quest for own in-ground pool finally found, at the 'Y'
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Perils for apparel in Plate-to-mouth maneuver

By Carol Perkins

A few years ago I had a notion that I wanted an in-ground pool and had the perfect spot in the backyard picked out for it. "Too many trees," Guy said when I showed it to him. "Can you imagine cleaning up a pool filled with pine needles?" Every argument I had FOR a pool gave him an argument AGAINST a pool. Even the "I need the exercise" declaration went over his head or out his ears. Most of the time, we negotiate well, but this time he was not listening. "You would never use a pool!" That was his constant reply. The truth was that I liked the looks of a pool. Lights under the water and on the edge of the fence around it created a peaceful atmosphere. Floral cushions on the patio chairs and an umbrella table in the corner would add to the relaxation of an afternoon pool party of one. I wanted the "look" more than the pool.
