Flu Level Raised to Widespread in Kentucky

'...follow the advice your parents gave you to prevent flu and other illnesses that tend to circulate at this time of year - wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and stay home when you're sick...'

FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is raising the influenza (flu) level in the state from "regional" to "widespread." Widespread activity is the highest level of flu activity, which indicates increased flu-like activity or flu outbreaks in at least half of the regions in the state.

"With widespread flu activity reported in Kentucky, now is a good time to protect yourself and your family by getting a flu shot", said Hiram C. Polk, Jr., M.D., commissioner of DPH.

2017-01-12 - Ballard Co., KY - Photo by Lee McClellan.
Hunters deployed this decoy spread on a January hunt at Ballard Wildlife Management Area in Ballard County in hopeful anticipation of ducks coming to them. The late season often offers the best waterfowl hunting of the year as the cold temperatures push birds south into Kentucky. Duck season closes Jan. 29 while goose hunters have two extra weeks to hunt this year. Goose season closes Feb. 15.

KY Afield Outdoors: The Last Waterfowl Hunting of the Season

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - In Kentucky, the coldest weather of the year often coincides with the best waterfowl hunting. This should prove especially true this year with the unusually warm start to the waterfowl hunting season that opened Thanksgiving Day.

"Late winter seems to be our best duck and goose hunting due to the lower temperatures," said Wes Little, migratory bird biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We should have birds moving south now with the bitter cold and snow to the north of us."

Hunters have an extra luxury this year of concentrating on ducks in January and geese in February as there are now two extra weeks to pursue geese. Duck season closes statewide on Jan. 29 while goose season doesn't close until Feb. 15.

Carol Perkins: How about a cooking show with real food?

Carol sends a message to Cooks vs. Cons to get real. She adventurous, to the point she'll try casserole, she has a cooking contest show in mind real food - 'Steak, chicken, fish (the common ones we find in our grocery stores). So with that in mind, I have planned (in my mind) a show with competitors who go into a regular person's house, chooses five ingredients from a pantry and five from a refrigerator and are given an hour to cook a full meal with a dessert. That would be fun to watch. - Carol writes
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: How can a cell phone disappear?

By Carol Perkins

If all else fails, I can entertain myself by watching cooking shows on TV. Among my favorites is Cooks vs. Cons. A panel of judges tastes various dishes, chooses winners, sends home a loser each week, and not until the elimination do they know if the participant is a cook or a con. Was he/she a professional or someone who cooked at home for his family? I know many skilled cooks who could compete with the pros when cooking "real" food, but I don't know one person who could turn some of the ingredients the contestants are given into eatable dishes.
