Snowball duty

2017-01-05 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. A week ago, back when it was still winter in Kentucky, cousins Hailey and Tillie enjoyed a day off from school by having a snowball fight. However, they found the process of making snowballs too tedious, and conscripted Uncle Tom/Dad to make the snowballs for them.

KY Afield Outdoors: Getting to know your new rifle

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Lots of hunters receive a new rifle over the holidays or take advantage of the subsequent sales to add to their collection.

The impulse is to immediately dash off to the shooting range. Fighting back that urge and instead taking time to familiarize yourself with your new rifle is a good first step toward safe and responsible ownership.

Because the mechanics and features of rifles can vary by model and manufacturer, it's best to approach this getting-to-know-you phase without any preconceived notions. The safety mechanisms on three popular hunting rifles illustrate the sometimes small, but not insignificant, differences between models.

Carol Perkins: How can a cell phone disappear?

This story does not yet have a happy ending - readers who have experience separation anxiety after losing a cell phone can appreciate the feelings and those who can remember their early teens can empathize with this growing up phase. Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: My wedding day, 25 Dec 1967

By Carol Perkins

How can a cell phone disappear? That is the question my entire family has been asking since my oldest grandson, age thirteen, lost his the day after he arrived and it never showed up. Most of the family's four-day stay was spent looking for that phone. The fact it was gone was devastating for him, but the fact his mother had just bought it brought on an entirely new set of problems that involved words like "responsible" and "careless." What thirteen-year-old isn't irresponsible and careless? I did my best to find that phone.

Naturally, the phone was dead. Therefore, any attempt to call the number was futile. "Where do you remember having it last?" Questions that led to retracing his steps were inevitable. As he described what he remembered, we all followed behind him, looking under pillows, couch cushions, and mattresses. Joseph, the eleven-year-old said, "The only thing left is pulling up the planks in the floors." I was beginning to think he was right.

KDA approves more than 12,800 acres for hemp

Program sees strong growth; participants must pass background check, submit GPS coordinates

By Ted Sloan

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) has approved 209 applications from growers who have been approved to cultivate up to 12,800 acres of industrial hemp for research purposes in 2017, nearly triple the number of acres that were approved for the previous year. More than 525,000 square feet of greenhouse space were approved for indoor growers in 2017.

"By nearly tripling hemp acreage in 2017 and attracting more processors to the state, we are significantly growing opportunities for Kentucky farmers," Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. "Our strategy is to use KDA's research pilot program to encourage the industrial hemp industry to expand and prosper in Kentucky. Although it is not clear when Congress might act to remove industrial hemp from the list of controlled substances, my strategic objective is to position the Commonwealth's growers and processors to ultimately prevail as national leaders in industrial hemp production."
