Free Living-Will workshop/lunch is Wednesday, 4 Jan 2017

By Linda Waggener

Do you have a Living Will? Mom wound up being hospitalized this year and it was one of the first questions asked. She did not have one and that left it open as to what her desires were in case she wound up on life support. Absolutely no one wants to think about that possibility. However, more and more of us are learning that having one could mean less suffering.

Betty Judd, RN, will present a free workshop on Living Wills to the public next Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 at 11amCT at the Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street in Columbia.

New Year's Eve came on Monday, December 31, 2007, and Adair County had big not-so-sound plans plans for Westlake Regional Hospital and Courier Journal was getting a justly deserved scolding for putting down development of I-66.

Ralph Waggener's commentary that day can be read at:Commentary: It's time to develop all of Kentucky to its potential

Over at Westlake Regional Hospital, plans were afoot to build a grander facility, and the management released an artists conception of what the hospital would look like with a 3rd Story added. It was all scheduled for the winter of 2008-2009, but the project never happened. See photo: Westlake Regional Hospital: Exterior view after 3rd Floor added

What we were doing 10 years ago, New Year's Eve 31 Dec 2006

Adair County was inaugurating the first woman Adair County Judge in its history
Click on headline for complete story. SEE ALSO: CM as a Daily Newspaper Sun 31 Dec 2006

By Ed Waggener

New Year's Eve came on Sunday, December 31, 2006, and Adair County was making history. From the December 31, 2006 edition of ColumbiaMagazine.com:
The first woman county judge in Adair County history takes oath of office today at 2:00pm CT. Judge Ann Melton will then administer Kentucky's ancient and solemn oath of office to City of Columbia and Adair County elected officials. Judge Melton had two very progressive administrations. CM 31 Dec 2006.
The photographic and journal account of that big day was carried the next day in CM: Inauguration Day: Sunday, December 31, 2006 with a huge photo album by Pen Waggener and Ed Waggener. It was a huge affair. Looking back, there are so many faces which have change little in the decade which passed. Some have changed dramatically and fortunes have been widely varied. It was one of the biggest inaugurations - as an Event - in Adair County history. - EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: The eve of a new year. CM 31 Dec 2009

Originally written in 1959 and first published 7 years ago on ColumbiaMagazine.com, this poem has been a favorite of CM readers by a favorite poet, through the years.
The eve of a new year
a poem by Robert Stone
On all the eves of all the years
all of men send up their cries
some for peace to all the earth
some for chance to prove their worth
some that all find second-birth
some for wealth-obtaining power
some for wisdom of the hour
some that 'neath them men should cower
Prayers to God omnipotent
prayers to gods that men invent
ceaseless prayers for endless things
rise to heaven on countless wings

But all of men when hope is fled
when ease is gone and peace is dead
find that words do not suffice
in seeking comfort purpose peace advice
And only those who know their God
who walk the ways that love has trod
who have a hope that never fails
though it be dimmed as fear assails
may comfort those who have no peace
and care for those whose needs increase

Each of us must pray to be
filled with love's humility
remembering that all mankind
in those who trust their faith shall find
And lest indifference creep in
unheeded in the rush and din
let us recall with solemn air
as we begin our every prayer
that all the sea has once been tears
and all the air has once been sighs
- Robert Stone, 6 December 1959
