It's Looking a Lot Like (bizarro) Christmas in Columbia!

2016-11-29 - Lindsey Wilson Building, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
It was Linda's concept. She spotted the great reflection in the window of the Lindsey Wilson Building, and thought it showed off the new look of the Jamestown Street face of the historic courthouse since the big maple was removed. The cars going around the circle-in-the-square is the first give away of the mirrored image, and one has to look closely to know that Nell's Variety Store hasn't snuck back in the middle right - that's Acapulco Mexican. An interesting aspect in the image, the Christmas lights in the Lindsey Wilson Building seem to be climbing toward the top of the clocktower, a subtle reminder of the days when Christmas lights 60 years or so ago were often put up and left up year around. Anyone else old enough to remember that? - Ed Waggener.

Carol Perkins: Historic moment in Upton, KY

Carol & Friends, having too good a time at Mama Lou's in Upton had the house in a uproar of laughter with a line as memorable as "I'll have what she's having." Katz' now has an equal - or better.
Next earlier Carol Perkins article: Carol Perkins: Trust and consequences

By Carol Perkins

Each month a group of my friends and I go out for lunch. I suggested going to Mama Lou's in Uno because my friend, Marge Kinslow, suggested it. She and I talk occasionally about my articles, and she recommends good places to eat. I passed this along to my friends when we were trying to decide on our November get-together.

Near-Death of Brennan Long: Autopsy of an Abusive Restraint

The Commonwealth of Kentucky's Public Advocate has released its report on an incident at Binet School, a part of the Jefferson County Public School system. After Kentucky Child Protective Services and the Commonwealth's Attorney failed to prosecute, P&A initiated its own investigation due to the severity of Brennan's injuries and the failure of the investigative agencies to explain those injuries or definitively rule out abuse. Many may find the report very troubling.

When the Lady Indians take the court tonight for their first contest of the season, they will look very little like the squad that finished 17-12 a year ago. Harrowing video of escape down burning Gatlinburg mountain

Gatlinburg resident Michael Luciano posted this video to his facebook page, of a harrowing escape through burning mountains last night with his business partner and his dog Red. There is some (understandably) very graphic language in the video, which ends rather abruptly. After a dead end, a wrong turn, and some incredibly close calls, Luciano did make it to safety.

Video links, WATE-6 from Park Vista hotel, Gatlinburg, KY

The disaster dominating this morning's news. Many links available - this one stood out for us emanating from a very familiar location

Gatlinburg, TN, area is like a second home, and are following the disastrous fire which has engulfed Gatlinburg, all too familiar with many of the sites now in flames. Here's a link to one of those locations, Park Vista Hotel high on a mountain above the main central business district at WATE-6: Fire everywhere,’ guests trapped inside Gatlinburg Park Vista hotel

CNN is offering perhaps the most comprehensive coverage at the moment, 7:59amCT, on TV as well as online. The WATE 6 link above was one of particular interest to CM staff, remembering a very recent stay there, where other Adair Countians were visiting, and the realization that very likely, many area residents are in prayer for the community and for friends or relatives who may be in harm's way while vacationing there. - EW

LWC Volleyball gives back at Special Olympics

Time out from NAIA National Tournament preparations
Blue Raider Volleyball team opens pool play against Tabor at 9amCT, today, Tue 29 Nov 2016, at the Tyson Events Center, 401 Gordon Drive, Sioux City, Iowa. Volleyball National Championship Pool Play three day schedule

By Charles Balcom, Assistant Sports Information Director

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team took a break from their match preparations to participate in the Special Olympics Clinic on Monday morning at the Tyson Events Center.

The Blue Raiders were joined by other teams competing in the national tournament to show their support for the local members involved with the program with a session of fun and games.

Head coach Andy Cavins was very pleased with the way his team interacted with the participants at the clinic.

"Our girls get a lot of enjoyment out of this activity and it's nice to see them genuinely engaged and giving back like this," Cavins said.

A variety of fun activities were on hand during the session. The Blue Raiders began by working on passing skills, which led to the group forming a circle and keeping a ball up in the air. An exercise serving the ball over the net was up next, followed by games with a jump rope and more fun with a giant inflatable volleyball. While the games did not always follow a set structure, one constant remained - smiles, laughter, and high fives.

The session came to a close with a few words about the Champions of Character initiative and how it can be demonstrated each and every day.

"It helps our girls maintain perspective on the great opportunity that is being a student-athlete, while also being a holistic person," Cavins said. "It's giving back to the community and enriching the lives of both our team and the Special Olympians."
