Blake Kennedy Aaron remembers his father Dr. Phil Aaron

Blake Kennedy Aaron spoke eloquently about Dr. Phil Aaron as a parent. He said, "My father was a public servant above all else, dedicating his time and love. He had so much compassion. Nearly every morning you'd find him at the funeral home for patients, might not have been his, might not have known them. You could reach him at night on his personal cell phone, he'd give it out to anyone who asked.

"He was part of many events and fundraisers, too many to count really. And if you were lucky, you'd see him at your own family reunion. He was a Christian who rededicated his life to the Lord.

Frank Dickerson: Barnetts Creek water pure, so cold it made teeth ache

Frank Dickerson writes:
For those of us who attended country schools, 'tiz a thousand wonders that more of us did not contract Polio! Thanks to the hardiness of our constitutions, perhaps. I will never forget the brackish water from the well at Knifley High. Urp! On the other hand, the water from the well at Barnett's Creek School was so pure and so cold that it made the teeth ache. It served not only the school but close neighbors as well. Lucky us! FD --Frank Dickerson

Ol' Dave: Hardships at Breeding nothing compared to Yellowhammer

Some people don't realize how good they had it. Breedingtonians actually luxiarated vis-a-vis beyond Spartan accomodations for scholars at Yellowhammer School, near Fairplay
Click on headline for complete lament

By Dave Rosenbaum
To contrast the relative luxury of the folks at Breeding Elementary, Yellow Hammer had none of the amenities listed by Mr. Fudge; in addition we had no electricity and our water came from a spring nearly half mile from the school.

There was a girls outhouse behind the school, but the old boys outhouse had been pushed over in anticipation that the School Board would construct a new one; but alas, the boys had to hit the cold, snowy hillside in front of the school. Calling the conditions Spartan really doesn't do it justice.

At least one time, during a gospel meeting at Pierces Chapel Baptist Church, the church had services at 10:00 AM as well as a nightly service. Since it would have been unseemly to be conducting school while church was in progress about 50 yards up the road, the school was dismissed and the kids ushered to the service. School resumed when the meeting ceased for the day.

Just the thought of such would give the ACLU a bad case of the vapors. I don't know if attending the services helped any of the students but it certainly didn't hurt them.

--Dave Rosenbaum

Dr. Phil Aaron Eulogy by Linda Waggener

This followed, the last of three Eulogies by longtime friends, United States Senator Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader, and Dr. Chuck Giles.

Eulogy for Dr. Phil R. Aaron
by Linda Waggener

Phil Aaron would have loved seeing all your faces here today in the Columbia Baptist Church.

He would have been thrilled to see you and hear your words of support and praise Senator Mitch McConnell, and Dr. Chuck Giles.

He'd probably be furious at Linda Waggener being on his memorial program.

Charles Marshburn: Was in grade school before 'germs' invented

Charles Marshburn writes:
Fortunately for me, I was in grade school before germs were "invented'. Never was sick and never missed school. I would like to add a memory to this blurb.

When we were harvesting the tobacco in eastern North Carolina, all field hands (Yep! We were red and yellow, black and white!) shared the same dipper out of the same well bucket and never had a problem with that.

Somebody else might have caught something from me, but I didn't catch anything from them. That cool well water was mighty good and we didn't put any chlorine in it. - Charles Marshburn

Sarah Aaron Bromley: words in memory of her father Dr. Phil

Sarah Aaron Bromley read a poem about choices as she remembered her Dad, Dr. Phil Aaron.

"You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived.

"You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all he has left.

Power outage reported following Storm of 27 Aug 2016

Outages affect dairy output

Fred Rowe of Rowe Farms reports that even with the tree damage on Keltner Road, the cows at Rowe Farms continued outstanding production, he wrote in answer to a question about how storms might traumatize his otherwise contented herd and cause a dip in production. Less milk would be produced, he wrote, "Only if the power is out and messes up their schedule. Russell Guy says since our 'lectric comes from Garlin, we didn't have any problems. But Doug Cowan's, the next farm north, comes from Cane Valley and was down."

Kentucky Color: Drinking water protocols, Breeding Grade School

Drinking water - when it comes from a faucet it is taken for granted - when it tastes good. But back in the late 1950s, Breeding School had no running water - it came from a well.
Click on headline for complete story from those wonderful days, and photo of a memento - a collapsible tin cup - from those days

By Billy Joe Fudge

I went to school at Breeding Grade School between the years of 1957 and 1961. There was no running water, no indoor bathrooms, no air conditioning, no computers, no cell phones, no lunchroom, no gymnasium, no detention, no time-out, no uniformed guard, no asphalt, no drink machines, no parents picking up children except to cut tobacco, etc.

Yes, we did have electricity, I think?

Carol Perkins: The summer of 2016 for Eme & Laura

Granddaughter and her new Metcalfe County friend take writer back to childhood days of being eleven, and the power and exhilaration of imagination
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: The Wig and QVC

By Carol Perkins

Eme, our eleven-year-old granddaughter, spent a week with us without her brothers. She and I had a wonderful time doing "girlie" things, but I also introduced her to a young lady her same age (born on the same day) and they became great friends. Watching them took me back to the days of playing with my cousin. Nobody could pretend as long during a day as we could.
