History Mystery building was part of O.G. Rowe Store and garage

By Chris Morrison writes:
This is part of O.G. Rowe store and garage building. The reason I know is it's on the property we own. We dozed the store building some years ago and are getting ready to do away with this also. So glad you posted this. I am sure it brought back a lot of good memories for a lot of people in the community - Chance, that is. Part of history in Columbia, KY. There are pictures of the store building somewhere in one of those books they made of Columbia that you can buy somewhere in town, I am not for sure where. - Chris Morrison

More than 100 Work Ready Skills Initiative proposals submitted

Applicant notification will be delayed until early September. By early September, a nine-member Work Ready Skills Advisory Committee will review all pre-applications, notify successful pre-applicants, and invite them to submit a full project application. Several projects in the area are in pre-application phase.

From Commonwealth News Center

FRANKFORT, KY (22 Aug 2016) - The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet received 112 project pre-applications -- totaling more than $510 million in requests --for first-round funding consideration through the Commonwealth's new $100 million statewide workforce development bond fund.

Announced by Governor Matt Bevin, Education and Workforce Development Cabinet Secretary Hal Heiner and Cabinet for Economic Development Acting Secretary Erik Dunnigan in July, the Kentucky Work Ready Skills Initiative is aimed at developing a highly trained, modernized workforce to meet the needs of employers and promote sustainable incomes for Kentuckians.

Individual project funding requests range from $40,000 - $28 million. Proposals came from all 10 state workforce areas and addressed a wide array of key industry sectors, including manufacturing, health, technology, transportation and trades.

"The response to this program has been truly astounding," said Gov. Bevin. "It dramatically underscores both the needs of our private sector employers and the willingness of our educational institutions and community partners to address those needs."

The Work Ready Skills Initiative infuses resources to expand career and technical education facilities and to upgrade equipment in those schools to current and future industry standards through local partnerships between private industry and educational institutions. The locally driven initiatives will train and educate workers to meet the workforce needs of Kentucky's employers now and in the future.

Eligible projects include: construction and equipping of a new facility to provide workforce training and education, renovation or enhancement of an existing facility, purchase of new or upgraded equipment, and first-year marketing expenses.

Applicants must provide at least a 10 percent financial match for all projects, and required partners include: private sector employers, high school/secondary technical schools and postsecondary institutions.

"Local business, education and community leaders across the Commonwealth have expressed great enthusiasm for this initiative," said Sec. Heiner. "They appreciate that unlike traditional top-down government mandates, this program provides communities the opportunity to identify their individual needs and to develop grassroots, sustainable solutions."

By early September, a nine-member Work Ready Skills Advisory Committee will review all pre-applications, notify successful pre-applicants, and invite them to submit a full project application.

This committee will include cabinet secretaries for Education and Workforce Development, Economic Development, and Labor, the chair of the Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board (KWIB), three employers nominated by the governor, one member nominated by the president of the Kentucky Senate, and one member nominated by the speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives.

The Commonwealth is planning additional application windows for Work Ready Skills Initiative funding, the next being spring 2017.

To learn more about this initiative, please visit www.KentuckyWorkReady.com, call 502-564-0372 or email workreadyskills@ky.gov.

Billy Joe Fudge: Source of water affects taste

Writer thinks that water district comparisons may have problems. Says Campbellsville's Water may taste better because it comes from Robinson Ridge side of Green River Lake, where there is less run off from agricultural activity. Suggest scientist at Campbellsville University and Lindsey Wilson College analyze the water for mineral content. He writes, "As for right now, we at the Fudge household in the Green Hills Area of Greater Columbia are suffering through the smell and taste with much fresh lime and lemon for iced water and IGA spring water from the hills of Tennessee."

By Billy Joe Fudge

A-n-d the smell might be even worse than the taste.

I would like to suggest caution when doing comparison taste test with other water districts. That being that water sources are completely different and, in other words, one "sprang" is better than another.

Our water is from Green River Lake and is primarily Green River water which hails from the South side of the Muldraugh Ridge in Lincoln County just West of Highway 27 at King's Mountain. The water is highly mineralized, thus the green color. (It would be great if someone like Lindsey Wilson College or Campbellsville University would do a mineral content test on area water sources.) The water flows through valleys surrounded by river bottoms, many of them very boggy and much agricultural activity. Those bottoms are surrounded by steep hills which causes rain water to flow quickly giving it a tendency to be highly erosive. Of course, there is Liberty, their industry and sewage treatment facility and their impact upon our drinking water. Many other small communities with higher population densities would have an impact as well.

Campbellsville's water, of course, also comes from Green River Lake but I would suggest that very little of their water comes from Green River itself. Their water intake is located on Robinson Creek. Although the springs feeding Robinson Creek are located on the South side of the Muldraugh Ridge as well, the water is impacted by much less farmland, no major sewage treatment facility and less small population centers. After 25 years of flying fire patrol I can tell you from personal observation that the water is different on the Green River side of the dam than on the Robinson Creek side. (I would like to see that mineral test, LWC or CU).

As for right now, we at the Fudge household in the Green Hills Area of Greater Columbia are suffering through the smell and taste with much fresh lime and lemon for iced water and IGA spring water from the hills of Tennessee.

-Billy Joe Fudge

Mitzi Bault writes on God's gifts and life questions

'I thank God for every day I have on this earth, but I still wonder, why me?' - Mitzi, who writes of life's blessings, memories of a wonderful father and her thoughtful grandmother, and asks for prayers for her Cravens family and the Scott girls.

By Mitzi Bault

Today was just a take me away day. Thanks to Robyn Curry. We met at Snake Creek and put in the kayaks. We paddled around for over 4 hours. It was wonderful to be on the water right in the middle of God's gifts. Fish jumping, birds, two large egrets. We stopped on a little sand bar and just sat and enjoyed our soundings.

A beautiful butterfly landed on my leg. It just sat there for a long time. I have been told by my Grandmother Audrey Waggener that when a butterfly lands on you, it is a sign from heaven. I think it was a sign from my dear friend that was layed to rest today.

Anyone have point-of-use solutions to bad tasting water

Any point of use solutions to make Adair County water more drinkable. Questions for consumers who might have solved the inconvenience of bad-tasting coffee, ice making, and drinking water problems. If consumers have taken the solution as their own responsibility - and admirable character trait - do they have ideas to share? Any advice? Should consumers just persevere and wait for the situation to be corrected, as it always has been, in past years?

By Ed Waggener
Personal commentary

Has anybody found any simple solutions to the bad tasting water coming through Adair County faucets in the past week?

Does anyone know of point of use methods or devices discovered in the current and and annually re-current problem, caused, we're told, by the algal bloom on Green River Lake?

For year after year after year, the company line has been that the timing and amounts of carbon filtration is the key to maintaining the quality of our drinking year.

Kentucky's unemployment rate drops to 4.9 percent in July 2016

Good news, with a reminder of state's consistently low labor force participation: The last time our unemployment rate dipped below 5 percent was 15 years ago in May 2001. We are now at par with the national average, said economist Manoj Shanker of the OET. It's worth celebrating - as long as we remember that we still have to address our consistently low labor force participation rate.
