KY Afield Outdoors: Five questions with Zak Danks

Danks is the new Ruffed Grouse and Wild Turkey Program Coordinator

By Kevin Kelly

Frankfort, KY - Zak Danks was homesick and uncertain about what career path he wanted to pursue after his freshman year at the University of Kentucky. The picture soon came into focus through his involvement with his local National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapter and after meeting a wildlife biologist employed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

The Logan County native changed his major and vigorously pursued a career as a wildlife biologist. His educational background and real-world experience laid the groundwork for him to take a new role with Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife earlier this year.

Danks now heads the Ruffed Grouse and Wild Turkey programs as a wildlife coordinator with the department.

Rane plans $5.8 Million Reinvestment in Russellville Plant

Steering and compressor components manufacturer plans upgrades, capacity expansion

By Amanda Stamper/Jack Mazurak

Seeking to return struggling Russellville automotive supplier Precision Die Casting to profitability and retain more than 170 jobs after purchasing it in February, India-based Rane (Madras) Ltd. plans to invest $5.8 million in new equipment, tooling and upgrades, Gov. Matt Bevin announced today.

Founded in 1956 as a captive die caster for Rockwell Corp., Precision Die Casting was sold in 1989. That began a string of ownership and name changes culminating with Rane (Madras) purchasing the company early this year.

Rane manufactures high pressure aluminum die-cast steering and compressor components for the automotive industry. Its customers include automotive suppliers TRW, Nexteer Automotive, Mahle and JTEKT. The investment planned will cover the costs of new tools, machinery and refurbishment of existing equipment. Company leaders expect this to increase efficiency and machine uptime while lowering costs by reducing scrap.

Turned up leaves seen more often in past two summers

Phenomenon is seen both thither - and yon; but is most pronounced on Jamestown Hill tree
Comments about: Maple Tree in bloom? Is there a forester in the house

Joyce Coomer writes:
Ed, I've been seeing turned-up leaves on trees the past two summers, esp. this summer, on trees scattered hither and yon. The leaves are turned-up even when there is very little wind and when there is no sign of a storm moving in. The tree you pictured on Jamestown hill has turned-up leaves more consistently and more profusely than other trees I see daily. - Joyce M. Coomer
Thanks, Joyce Coomer: CM may have to call in Billy Joe Fudge on this matter. Personally, I am wondering 1) If someone could charge money for people to view it? 2) Can anyone figure out any route for the Canadian Tour Buses to get around Praise Assembly of God?

Garnett residence newsworthy 100 years ago

By Jim

The reappearance of the Garnett residence photo brought to mind these brief snippets from the Adair County News early in the 20th century:
June 26, 1912
"Miss Jennie Garnett, who owns the Garnett homestead, is going to make great improvements in the appearance of the residence, and will also have it made much more convenient. Mr. J.A. Willis and Mr. W.C. Murrell have the contract."

June 17, 1914
"Miss Jennie Garnett has just completed an iron foot bridge, twenty-six long, across the branch running through her lot fronting her residence. The entrance to the home, from now on, will be from the pike, some distance below the entrance to the cemetery. This is quite an improvement, and it will afford great convenience, besides it adds a little more value to a very desirable piece of property."
A short piece appearing in the News the week following the latter announcement reported Miss Garnett was one of the 21 faculty members of Cumberland College, Williamsburg, Ky., stating, "She has charge of the piano department and has had for the past three years."
