From Attorney General Andy Beshear's office of Communications

FRANKFORT, KY. (July 6, 2016) - Attorney General Andy Beshear and his Cyber Crimes Unit today announced a Shepherdsville man has been arrested for seeking sex with a minor.

Jonathen Howerton, 24, of Shepherdsville, was arrested July 5 and charged with prohibited use of an electronic communications system to procure a minor for sex, a Class D felony.

According to cyber investigators, Howerton initially met an undercover investigator from Beshear's office, who was posing as a minor, in an online chat room. He then used the Kik messenger app to communicate over the Internet for several days.

Howerton requested to meet the person he believed to be a minor to engage in sexual acts. When Howerton arrived at the believed encounter in Jeffersontown, he was immediately arrested. Howerton, who was armed with a handgun, told investigators he worked as a security guard and allegedly admitted that he traveled to meet the supposed minor for sex.

At his arraignment today in Jefferson County Circuit Court, a judge ordered Howerton not to have any contact with minors or computers and set his bond at $50,000.

The work of the Cyber Crimes Unit, a division of the Department of Criminal Investigations in the Office of the Attorney General, is part of Beshear's core mission to keep sexual predators away from Kentucky's families and children.

"It's our core mission to take those who would exploit children off the streets to ensure our communities are safe," Beshear said. "I would like to thank my team along with Chief Conrad and the Crime Reduction Unit detectives, the Jeffersontown Police Department and the Kentucky State Police for helping in this case."

Since taking office January 4, Beshear's Cyber Crimes Unit has arrested or convicted 26 sexual predators.
