Professional driving career in the discussion this week Big Rigs, the need for places that a Big Rig can safely stop and refuel, plus careers in driving have been in the news this week. Women drivers were highlighted in this article. Hearing the point of view from a training center owner helps highlight the increasingly professional career status of the job formerly called 'truck driver' or 'commercial driver'. And it agrees with Mr. Hale's note that drivers deserve respect. Comments re article 84153 Mark Hale Columbia has an opportunity for nice truck stop 2016-07-01 22:49:23 | Comments | Printable version

Billy Joe Fudge: Agrees with Mark Hale, Big Al on truck stop Billy Joe Fudge writes: I've been saying the same thing for several years, Big Al. Harry I. Furkins: Columbia is ideal location for truck stop Cites strategic central location between I-65 and I-75 Harry l Furkins writes: I agree with Al & Mark about a truck stop in the area of Columbia. Cenrtaliy located between I-65 & I-75 with a a small offset from Somerset, soon to be the Route 66 corridor. Flying J or Pilot would be my choice. They are cleaner, well maintained, & more secure; cheaper on fuel, with points. It takes a crew to operate a truck stop, so look at the employment, plus tax dollars to the area..Truckers also shop on their layovers so even more money spent. Local repair shops would profit also. City council should look at this idea before one of the other towns along the parkway jumps on the band wagon.I am surprised they haven't already. Wish I had some money to invest. - Harry l FurkinsComments re article 84153 Mark Hale Columbia has an opportunity for nice truck stop 2016-07-01 14:49:21 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Mark Hale: Columbia has an opportunity for nice truck stop His favorite choice of a big chain truck stop would be Flying J, with a Denny's inside. For Columbia, a really good local truck stop, with a Betty's type restaurant that drivers and locals alike would enjoy, could be great opportunity for local investors, community leaders. He asks everyone to rethink the image of truckers, who are just doing a repetitive, essential job, who don't have much time to do anything but work, eat, sleep, repeat, each day longing to get back to family and loved ones. Click on headline for complete essay Comments re article 50439 With cooperation Big Al would help put Columbia on the map By Mark Hale For the most part I agree with Big Al. Columbia could use a nice truckstop. I wonder if it would really be a goldmine, though. There would be a lot of trucks there daily. The thing is now truck stops are very competitive. Mom and Pops are a thing of the past. The big chains are what are thriving. I would think the best one of those chains for Columbia would be a Flying J because they have Denny's in them. Lots of locals would take advantage of that. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2016-07-01 06:11:21 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
