Sen. Max Wise Legislative Update: Fri 17 Jun 2016

State Senator Max Wise: Comments on Orlando, a visit to iLead Academy, Russell County Farm Bureau Appreciation Dinner, mental health issues, workforce training innovations and other topics.

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

FRANKFORT, KY (17 Jun 2015) Multiple committee meetings in multiple cities, along with a couple of visits with constituents throughout the 16th District have marked another productive week serving as your state senator. That said, it would be remiss of me not to mention the horrific incident that occurred last weekend in Orlando. My thoughts and prayers this week have been with all those involved.

Vonnie Kolbenschlag: Lauds CJE, Fiscal Court for tree decision

Applauds their decision to follow advice of retired forester Billy Joe Fudge and hopes that more appropriate trees will soon replace weakened maples and that they will be properly pruned and maintained

Personal Commentary

I LOVE trees! Not only for appearance, but also for the benefit provided supplying oxygen and beauty. It makes me sad to see trees mutilated by someone whose qualification is having a chain saw.

Our historic courthouse is blocked by trees that have grown large and possibly damaged foundation and exterior to the outside of the building. It's not the trees fault, that's just what big trees planted so close to a building do.

JIM: A brush with death

It's been slow-but-sure-progress since 2014 and a trip to the ER and two nights in the hospital. Cardiologists halved a med dosage and since then, the writer has experienced steady improvements. And writes, today, 'Despite my (hopefully) humorous whining and mewling on occasion, I am most grateful for the second chance at life. And despite my sometimes self-directed off-the-wall comments, I'm starkly, acutely aware of how close my brush with death was in early November 2014.

By JIM

Two years ago about now, some – many – days it was difficult for me to go for a walk and to take care of routine around-the-house chores. As a matter of fact, a lot of outdoor work went begging that summer because I couldn't do it, and mowing became an exhausting, very nearly unbearable ordeal with labored breathing and frequent rest stops. All this culminated in an early November trip to the emergency room, a "visit" to the cath lab, and two nights in the hospital, followed by an immediate turn for the better.

Robert Cumming: Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge

Robert Cumming writes:
I remember visiting the San Francisco bay area and the Golden Gate Bridge one time with a friend when we unwittingly decided we would walk across the entire length. We started out briskly at the west bridge approach at Golden Gate Park and proceeded toward the east bank and the city of Sausalito and Marin county. We made it to the first of two huge suspension cable towers posing for pictures with the permanent bridge painting crew (it takes over a year to continuously paint the bridge from one end to the other). Making our way across the massive bridge we suddenly came to the realization we were not even half way and this bridge is probably at least 3 miles long making it a six mile hike from one bank approach to the other and back! None-the less we never walked the Golden Gate bridge length. --Robert Cumming
