Chris Oliver wants alcohol purchases to benefit Adair

A milestone: tonight officially marks the last Super Bowl ever in which Adair County alcohol tax dollars have to benefit Marion, or Pulaski, or Warren counties.

By Chris Oliver

I sent in a note nearly 2 years ago about a Kentucky Derby party I hosted, and how my dollars benefited other communities because of the inability to buy alcohol here in Adair County. I could type up a similar story about my trip to Bowling Green yesterday to prepare for tonight's Super Bowl party. Needless to say, my in store purchases (alcohol and otherwise), gasoline, and dinner bill (including a tip to a great waitress) will all benefit another town in our fine state. I'd rather that money stay here, and I'm thankful we'll get to decide that on March 22nd.

CHS students learn to extract DNA in biology class

2016-02-07 - Campbellsville High School, 230 W Main, Campbellsville, KY - Photo Calen McKinney, Campbellsville Independent Schools photo.
Campbellsville High School students recently learned how to extract DNA from strawberries. In Jessica Bradshaw's biology classes, students are studying DNA and learning where it's found, what it's made of and what it does. To see what DNA looks like, students performed an experiment. First, students smashed strawberries inside a plastic bag. They then added a mixture of water, shampoo and salt. Students poured their strawberry mixture onto a coffee filter, to drip into a cup. Then, students poured chilled alcohol onto the mixture to get the strawberry's DNA to separate. In this photo CHS biology teacher Jessica Bradshaw, third from left, talks to students, from left, sophomores Brookelyn Franklin, Makala Antle and Lauren Riddle about how chilled alcohol separates DNA from the liquid mixture.

The class was free to any qualifying person thanks to classroom space provided by the Adair County School board.

Adair County Electrical Inspector Chris Bennett had a goal to offer the course to area electricians because the length of years it takes to become a Master Electrician (8 years) and how much effort is needed to pass these exams. He also wanted to contribute his skills in this specialty due to the shortage of licensed electricians.

Money, Sex, and Murder

When Kentucky entered the union as the fifteenth state in 1792, an era of growth and prosperity was under way. In 1820 the Commonwealth ranked sixth in population of the nation.

Land speculation and the expectation of continual rising prices put many of its citizens deeply into debt.
