Electricians in class learning language, National Electrical Code Area electricians from seven central Kentucky counties -- Adair, Metcalfe, Russell, Pulaski, Casey, Taylor, and Marion -- began studying to take their state licensing exam on January 5, 2016. The class was free to any qualifying person thanks to classroom space provided by the Adair County School board. Adair County Electrical Inspector Chris Bennett had a goal to offer the course to area electricians because the length of years it takes to become a Master Electrician (8 years) and how much effort is needed to pass these exams. He also wanted to contribute his skills in this specialty due to the shortage of licensed electricians. Twenty nine electricians started the 10 week program with three dropping out after the first week. Five weeks into the course 26 electricians are meeting two nights a week for a total of six classroom hours each week, with the desire to become licensed electricians. These electricians are learning to speak a new language (National Electrical Code) and doing advanced mathematical, electrical equations just for fun. Inspector Bennett says he has been very impressed at the effort put forth by these men. Some of these electricians are working as far away as Lexington and Bardstown, then driving to Columbia for three hours of electrical training and then driving to their homes. Bennett would like to thank the media that helped communicate the free opportunity to the public, and he wants to thank Kirby Hancock for allowing the class to meet in his classroom at Adair County High School, and Barney Taylor for giving up his classroom the first nights the class met.
