Jon Halsey: Agrees with position in Open Letter to the Pope

Jon Halsey writes:
You raise an important issue.

Pope John Paul II issued an important encyclical in 1965 on this very issue. (Evangelium Vitae (25 March 1995) | John Paul II)

This "Gospel of Life" is as current today as it was 50 years ago, but I agree with you, given the disintegration of societal mores another strongly worded position paper would not be redundant. - -Jon Halsey

Two Questions in an open letter to the Pope

It will be comforting to many women who have had abortions that they may receive forgiveness. Your good heart is deeply appreciated on this and many other issues.

Tech Savvy Consumer: There is no digital antenna

Harry L. Mack simplifies what antennas do and why premium prices may be being charged when marketers try to sell, at inflated prices, digital antennas - a misnomer, he says. And, he says, there are some very valid, very economical reasons to install an antenna today. There are more stations available off-air, and often stations not otherwise available can be pulled in with a one-time cost antenna. He gets the Lexington station he likes over-the-air. His cable company doesn't carry it.
Click on headline for complete column.

By Harry Mack

In a recent edition of an area paper, I read several references to a digital TV antenna or digital antenna. The term digital antenna is a misnomer, probably created by a marketing person with no background in antennas or electronics. The same thing applies to the term HD antenna or High Definition TV antenna.

With my background in telecommunications and electronics, I spot this type of hype right away. I hope this commentary will help those not familiar with antennas.

Willard Pritchard very alert for danger at two Adair intersections

Willard Pritchard writes:
Traveling from Glens Fork to Columbia there are two intersections I watch closely. At Hwys 704 & 55 many times drivers won't stop for the sign on 704 if they think they can beat the vehicle on 55. Tom Chaney: The Plague of 1918

Of Writers And Their Books: The Plague of 1918. Tom says the terror of 1918 was spread by public officials -- "not by exaggerating the disease [influenza] but by minimizing it, by trying to reassure.". This column first appeared 19 September 2010.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: From The Hawks to The Band

By Tom Chaney

The Plague of 1918

For several years we kept a permanent search on an internet auction site for Horse Cave items. Some real treasures have come our way.

One of the most interesting was a packet of letters written by a merchant of this place to his daughter off in college in the fall of 1918. For the most part the letters relay information about family and about folks she would have known in the town. Generally he wrote in the late afternoon -- always in a rush to get the letter to the post office. Occasionally he was too late for the post office and had to carry the letter to the railroad depot to get it on the last train. Those letters carried the postmark "RPO" for Railway Post Office -- sorted and cancelled on the train.

As fall began to edge toward winter, he began to recount illness and death as the influenza epidemic began to lay waste to Horse Cave.<
