Remembering Julian Bond, great civil rights leader

Statement upon death of Civil Rights leader Julian Bond who had important ties to Kentucky, by KY Human Rights Executive Director Johnson:
"The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights is saddened by the death this week of the great Civil Rights icon, Julian Bond. The world is better because Julian passed this way. He gave every ounce of his being for human rights.

"Julian Bond spent his life fighting and leading for equality. He lived to see the fruits of so many of his and others' efforts, including the end of segregation, the passage of civil rights laws for Americans, and the establishment of the right to vote for blacks and other minorities.

"He was a unique man, and he fought for the betterment and equality of many people who have been oppressed. He was a master orator, politician, brilliant civil rights leader, and a remarkable educator and historian.

"He had deep ties to Kentucky. His great-grandmother was a slave brought to Kentucky as a wedding gift for her owner. His grandfather, James Bond, was a minister born into slavery in Lawrenceburg, KY. His grandfather graduated from Berea College and later became a founding staff member of Lincoln Institute.

"There will never be another Julian Bond, and we extend our sympathy to his wife, children and all of his loved ones."

Travel note and comment on state of fleet, Pulaski Co., KY

Commentary from Joyce M. Coomer

Monday, Greg and I were in Somerset. Usually, when we go to Somerset, it's on the weekend so we don't see much of the day to day work traffic. In the course of driving from one point to another in Somerset, we saw four or five local government vehicles for the road department and the water district. The newest truck we saw was a late 1990s model.

Interesting that Somerset and Pulaski County, where average household income is considerably higher than Adair County, are utilizing vehicles more than 15 years old. Joyce M. Coomer

Carol Perkins: In a small town, it's not about money

'Only in a small town can a person call on a business owner, who happened to be covered in cars and trucks to repair and certainly didn't have time to do a job not in his job description, and that person come to your rescue.' - CAROL PERKINS
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: After $500 consult, still Sleepy in Edmonton, KY

By Carol Perkins

For two hours, I had been cooling my heels at home, waiting for my appointment for a massage. Nothing is more relaxing than a massage and I needed to relax. Near the time for me to leave, I dashed out the garage door, leaving it unlocked so I thought. When I got inside the car, the keys were not there.

I went back to the house to get my keys but the door I thought was unlocked was not. Sometimes it locks itself. Immediately, that sinking feeling you get when you know you are doomed came over me. Normally, I would have had a spare key outside, but last Christmas when we changed front door hardware, the key for those doors was not put in the hiding spot. I blame Guy for that. I found two keys but neither fit.

Kentucky Communications Network Authority created

KCNA will Manage Statewide Broadband Network Authority to oversee P3 master agreement with contractor to build infrastructure project.Governor Beshear says that with the creation of KCNA, Kentucky is not in catch-up mode, but is leapfrogging the rest of the nation. Rep. Hal Rogers notes, "Broadband is as important to our progress today as interstate highways were 60 years ago. It's essential to economic growth and prosperity in eastern Kentucky. KentuckyWired - the Iway - 3,000 'middle miles' of fiber infrastructure will be built

From Governor Steve Beshear's Communications Office

Frankfort, KY - (18 Aug 2015) - Governor Steve Beshear has signed an executive order creating the Kentucky Communications Network Authority (KCNA) and its governing board to manage the KentuckyWired open-access broadband network.

The project will create high-speed Internet connectivity to every corner of the Commonwealth to enhance economic development and workforce and educational opportunities while sustaining Kentucky's economy for generations to come.

"Broadband, like electricity, water and sewer, is now an essential service but has been too expensive for private carriers to build out a high-speed, high-capacity network across the entire state," Gov. Beshear said. "With KentuckyWired, or the I-Way, an open-access network, the state will be responsible for building out the middle portion of a fiber network, similar to our interstate system of roads."
