Jon Halsey: Paying legal bill more disgusting local politics

Personal commentary

Jon Halsey writes:
They sure are free with our money and evidently with no reasons given why we should pay it.

If it was to have come from their pockets I'm sure they would have plenty of rationale why it shouldn't be paid. and none justifying why it should. Since it's our money, what the heck, pay it, move on.

Just more disgusting local politics.

Removing dead animals from the roads matter of simple respect

By Joyce M. Coomer

I do this on a fairly regular basis. Last Monday it was a black and white cat on Hurt Street and a squirrel on our road. When I see deceased animals on 704 and have a spot I can stop and there's not vehicles behind me, I also remove them from 704. What really irks me is people who will leave an animal that has been killed by a vehicle at the end of their driveway until the animal's remains have been ground to nothing by their vehicles and other vehicles and the weather. Simple respect for the dead of any species should prompt them to at least move the dead animal out of the roadway. - Joyce M. Coomer

Frankfort, KY - For the first time since January 2009, Kentucky's Unemployment Insurance (UI) Trust Fund has a positive balance and is on the path to solvency.

Gov. Steve Beshear today joined lawmakers and business leaders to announce the Commonwealth has paid off the $972 million federal loan--needed to meet unemployment insurance benefit obligations during the Great Recession--at least two years ahead of schedule.

Maintaining a positive balance ensures Kentucky employers will save approximately $165 million in federal UI taxes.

Letter: Upset with drivers on Fairground Street

Mitzi Bault writes:
I am very upset with somteone!!! Ricky and I have been watching a Momma deer and little baby. Every morning they come from the creek, cross our yard and cross Fairground Street. Last night before dark, Blake came home and he had just taken care of getting a deceased baby deer out of the road in front of our drive.

To the person that hit the deer: Could you not have stopped and moved the little deer out of the road? I may be wrong, I thought you were required to report a hit deer to police or the KY Department of Fish and Wildlife. --Mitzi

Carol Perkins: After $500 consult, still Sleepy in Edmonton, KY

Strange coincidence: Sleep deprivation is more common than we might suspect. Even doctors report similar experiences to what Carol Perkins has been going through.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Fashion like a lady of the 20s at the beach By Carol Perkins

According to a sleep study survey and a fifteen minute Skype session with a sleep doctor in a nearby city, I have chronic insomnia. Five hundred dollars later (billed to my insurance, but I paid $50), I have had no follow-ups or solutions.

I haven't heard from the doctor. If I were ever contacted, I don't know it. Then again, I didn't follow up because I had little faith in the suggested procedure of behavior modification rather than medicine. Other than hypnosis, I don't know what would work.

Joyce Loy comments on Columbia, KY gas prices

Joyce Loy writes:
Ed, that was Monday and this afternoon, Tuesday until 4:30pm. I drove past Fivestar at 4:30 this evening and gas was $2.25. Went past Speedway and it was $2.39 a gallon. Came back thru at 5:05pm and Fivestar was up to $2.39. Gas prices do not change that often. While in the middle of all this, the news said oil prices had fallen.
