The Adair County Fiscal Court failed to pass an ordinance which would have placed fire dues on tax bills, a measure which had been requested by the Breeding Area Fire Department and the Knifley Area Fire Department.

The court was present two option for the ordinance, one with an opt out provision, allowing those who wished to do so to go through a relatively cumbersome procedure to opt out, and a second which would have made payment of the dues mandatory. Both provided for an "opt in" for Fire Departments.

Conway announces lawsuit filed against Marathon Petroleum

"When Ashland and Marathon merged in the late 1990s, the Federal Trade Commission said one state bore watching because the merger could create a lack of competition at the wholesale level. That state was Kentucky."

News from the Office of Attorney General Jack Conway

Attorney General Jack Conway filed a lawsuit Tuesday, May 12, 2015, in federal court against Marathon Petroleum. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Kentucky, alleges that Marathon engages in anti-competitive practices that lead to higher gas prices for consumers across Kentucky.

"For almost two decades, Marathon has been allowed to run rampant in Kentucky," Attorney General Conway said. "Marathon owns and operates the only refinery in Kentucky, and it maintains its wholesale monopoly by making retailers and other potential suppliers enter into contracts that are outright anti-competitive. This conducts harms everyone who buys gas in Kentucky."

Card of Thanks from Victoria Pike

Thank you for the many kindnesses and expressions of sympathy shown during the passing of my husband, Gary Pike, and my mother, Gertrude Browning in the last two months.

This was a most difficult time but I have made it through with the help of good friends, family, neighbors. I was able to keep the cattle through this time with the help of my farmer friends and many of the members of the Adair Co. Cattlemen's Association. Neighbor helping neighbor as it was when I was a child. Also, to Intrepid Home Health and their nursing staff who were here almost every day of the last year and a half. They became family.

I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and small town Columbia is still about the best place on the planet to live.

So thank you to all who were there when I need a friend. I have tried to get cards out but if I missed anyone, your kindness will never be forgotten. Vicky Browning Pike --Victoria Pike
