New license plate celebrates organ donation

The new plate, available after April 1, 2015, helps kick off a month-long celebration that showcases the various perspectives of those touched by donation and transplantation.

Circuit Clerk Dennis Loy is recognizing National Donate Life Month this April. Every year since 2002, April has been filled with stories to spread the lifesaving message of donation in order to motivate people to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors. This year is especially exciting as the release date for the new Donate Awareness plate, which will be launched on April 1, 2015. Everyone can register as a donor today at donatelifeky.org or by saying "Yes" when they renew their driver's license.

The Donate Life plate encourages individuals to put the gift of donation into perspective, stating "Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Saves Lives." This statement illustrates the grandeur of what a simple "Yes" at the driver's license office has the ability to do. Similarly, it gives passionate individuals the opportunity to publicly show their support for this worthy cause. The new plates will be available in the County Clerk's office after April 1, 2015.

Dogs running loose risk, present danger - to selves and drivers

By Susan Rarey
Personal commentary

I have never been able to understand why some dog owners let their dogs roam loose. Dogs are smart, but they do not understand consequences, such as the consequences of getting in the street.

It's dangerous, obviously to the dog, but also to the driver of the car that brakes suddenly or swerves to avoid hitting a dog in the street.

I had the unfortunate incident of hitting a dog yesterday on my way to work.

Carol Perkins: Setting Sail

Preparing to leave for a cruise, Carol recalls what happened the last time she visited the Caribbean

By Carol Perkins

I haven't packed one thing. I'm not sure I can even find last year's summer clothes, but they are probably stacked under the Christmas decorations Guy took to the basement and I haven't bothered to go downstairs to see where he put them. It is getting time for me to dig out shorts, tops, and Capri pants.

The surprise cruise that was to take us somewhere but none of us knew for sure where has arrived. We now know that we are going to a city in Jamaica, then to Cozumel, and the Grand Caymans.

Ed, I want to thank you for featuring on Columbia Magazine some of the animals from GRAS and I want to give cheers to the people working there at this time. We have so many pets just being turned out or taken back it is a shame.

Rescue animals are the best. They love you forever and all they ask is some one to care for them. I am hoping some Columbia Magazine readers will open their hearts and homes to these animals. I would but I have 5 rescues already. Thank you again. --Lois Cunningham

Vehicle accident reports should include cell phone use

By Joyce Coomer
Personal Commentary

For several years before wearing a seatbelt became mandatory in Kentucky, accident reports included whether or not passengers were wearing seatbelts. With cell phones and their ilk being blamed for vehicle accidents, I think all accident reports should include whether or not any parties involved were using any electronic devices at the time of the accident; maybe that would make people more aware of the dangers of using electronic devices of any kind while driving.

Once I met an ambulance, running with lights and siren, when the driver was talking on his cell phone. I know, someone is going to say perhaps he was getting information about whomever they were going to pick up, but the person in the passenger's seat should have been doing that instead of the driver.
