Daily News for Sunday, March 1, 2015
Introducing the newest arrivals at GRAS In mid-week, seven tiny little four day old orphaned puppies arrived, presenting a huge challenge and stealing the hearts of everyone there, including the Director, Kim Sallee. That challenge was met. The puppies thrived with love and bottle feeding. On day three she said she was even more sure these little fatties were going to make it. On Saturday, February 28, Jimmy Harmon brought in a little black momma and her 4-5 day old baby. Little Momma turned into a blessing, able to take on nursing for two of the other orphaned puppies, and assist the director with judgment calls on the blended family's well being. Kim Sallee promises to let the community follow the family vicariously through her stories and pictures. More than that, she says there's room for volunteers and visitors to GRAS - already turning into a delightful destination - better than a trip to a zoo in the city. Click on headline for complete story, photo(s) By Kim Sallee, Director, Green River Animal Shelter This past week has been a very exciting and busy one at the Green River Animal Shelter. Not only have we had several adoptions and owner/pet reclaims, we also have eight new babies! Jimmy Harmon, our animal control officer ,called me midweek saying he was bringing me a litter of ophaned puppies. Mike Watson: Family Artifacts of Old Adair County... Prologue: I stumbled across one of these items researching Lapsleys in early Adair County after reading Tine Reynolds' article on the origins of Frank Wolford and the Lapsley connections. Only one item connects to Lapsley, but the others seemed to fall into view as I searched. - MW By Mike Watson Time is a relative thing, to some. What catches the eye, ear, imagination? No one know what tomorrow will bring, regardless of their qualifications. Time slips from my grasp daily, time I will never be able to regain. So, while I was committed to finishing a 'job of work' on the War of 1812, I slipped into another time-stream and pursued a bit of fluff. The following may be of some interest to those, intrigued like self, in the activities and possessions of the long-departed. Here are three bits from the files of the Adair County News: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2015-03-01 19:51:06 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
Mary Keltner: Link to best burger in every state in America Yes, if you guessed a quirky little Sincere Restaurant two counties away from Columbia, but had doubts, you may be right. The burgers are so good natives have for years driven back just to enjoy a half dozen of the delicious morsels per meal. And whether you think this location is so unique it's is own country, not just a county, not a part of any larger jurisdiction in the universe, it is Mary Keltner sends this link, www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/the-best-burger-in-every-state-in-america with message, "Note the entry for Kentucky...." We're adding the rules: Guess before click and let's know if you deserve a Gold Star for your forehead. If you guessed the a home patted burger with a yellow tomato, thick slice of onion, lettuce just torn from the head, served at the old Riggins' Restaurant in Dunnville, KY, you have the right burger but not the one chosen in the column. If you suggested my Mother's homemade burger, made with oatmeal extender, Worchester Sauce, chips of onion and celergy, with lettuce/onion, onion, served on slices of Wonderbread - we couldn't afford hamburger buns, but did know for another 65 years that Wonderbread was better - you would be right about the burger, wrong about the selection.
