LWC Men's Tennis defeats Austin Peay State 4-3

Blue Raiders rallied with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to complete the comeback

By Charles Balcom

CLARKSVILLE, TN - The Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team rallied from two points down to defeat NCAA Division I member Austin Peay State (Tenn.) by a 4-3 margin on Saturday, February 28, 2015.

The lead changed hands four times before the Blue Raiders (5-2) were finally able to top the Governors (4-3).

Ignacio Huertas provided the winning point in a three-set thriller at the No. 5 singles position. After splitting the first two sets, Huertas was able to battle back after trailing 3-1 in the third and decisive set to secure the point and the win for the Blue Raiders.

Before the decisive point, the match had become tied at 3-3 through intense doubles and singles play.

Lindsey Wilson was the first on the scoreboard after securing the lone doubles point. NCAA scoring was used where only one point is awarded for the best of three doubles matches.

At the No. 2 doubles position, Denis Porcic and Raul Mendez defeated Aaron Jumonville and Aleksas Tverijonas 8-2 for the first win. Edberg Espinoza and Francisco Charters followed with an 8-6 win over Iago Seffrin and Dimitar Ristovski at the No. 1 position to secure the lone doubles point. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished as Huertas and Pablo Vilches had been locked in an 8-8 battle with Oleg Drobysh and Manuel Montenegro when the point was secured.

The Governors quickly tied things up when Tverijonas defeated Porcic at the No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0. Austin Peay State took its first lead of the day when Jumonville took down Mendez at the No. 3 position 6-3, 6-2 for the 2-1 lead.

Charters evened things up with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles position, but Austin Peay State took the lead right back with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at the top singles position to take a 3-2 lead and need just one more point to win the match.

But that point would not come as Vilches won 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles position before Huertas comeback at the No. 6 singles to complete the 4-3 Blue Raider victory. - CHARLES BALCOM, Lindsey Wilson College
