Letter: Followup from Jeffrey Campbell

Jeffrey Campbell writes:
Thank you for supporting the VETERANS, I really believe it would be a great course of action of the veterans in the surrounding counties, a help for those who have a difficult time getting to and from the VA hospitals they are having to travel to at this time. I think the closest one in this area is Somerset, which is around 65 miles from my home. I hope our Senators of KY will take this into consideration. - Jeffrey Campbell

Letter: Worked at Fruit of the Loom

Mary Ann Brown writes:
Well, I am an old Fruit of the Loom retired employee. I worked 27 years there and my mom worked there 23, my husband worked there 23 and for the life of me I do not see where a union would have made our jobs any better. The company was very lenient when we had sickness in our families, they did have us to do piece work production but if you worked at all production was not that hard to make your quota for the day. Workers got numerous smoke breaks, coffee breaks and no supervisor breathed down your shirt collar. No boss walking around pushing you all day long, people had fun and worked and we appreciated our jobs. Now the factories of today are quite different, they have more stricter rules to follow and do not have that laid back atmosphere. When you worked at Fruit your co-workers were like your family. I really don't see how a UNION would have made things any better in Campbellsville. --Mary Ann Brown

Letter: Agrees with clinic idea

George Kolbenschlag writes:
I agree with Ralph and Neal Gold. It strikes me as unrealistic to expect a full-fledged VA hospital in Columbia. But a clinic is another matter. I think that's a very real possibility. And I think doing it as an adjunct to our hospital makes all sorts of sense both because it will cost a whole lot less and because it will help assure the permanence of the hospital. I'm encouraged that Mr. Gold is on top of the idea already! --George Kolbenschlag

Letter: Doesn't see sufficient benefits of union membership

Jon Halsey writes:
Never belonged to a Union but understand that they accomplished much good in an earlier time. As the Book of Ecclesiastes notes "there is a time and a season for all things."

Still one can't help but wonder why, if Unions are so great, members must be coerced to join.

I joined a health insurance plan 50 years before the government forced me to and I would still be paying a premium without the Federal mandate because I see definite benefits that make the cost worthwhile.

Last July, Gary Casteel, the Southern region director for the United Auto Workers, explained: "This is something I've never understood, that people think right to work hurts unions. To me, it helps them. You don't have to belong if you don't want to... and if you don't think the system's earning its keep, then you don't have to pay."

Stripped down to basics, Mr. Casteel feels that Right to Work Laws force Unions to work to earn their memberships.

Seems like a lot of working folk no longer see sufficient benefits to offset the negatives of Union membership. Recent polls show that 71 percent vs. 22 percent of citizens agree. --Jon Halsey

Serenity Greer writes:
Hello to anyone who is reading. I was the daughter of Ricky Greer. I am the oldest out of three and I just wanted to say my daddy was the best man who ever lived, and the best I will ever know. Ky's Medicaid Expansion: 40,000 Jobs, $30B Economic Impact

New Deloitte study confirms that expansion is 'overwhelming' right choice; generates more than enough funding to pay for Kentucky's eventual costs

By: Kerri Richardson, Terry Sebastian

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky's decision to expand the Medicaid program is paying enormous dividends in terms of jobs, economic growth, and improved health for the more than 375,000 Kentuckians who signed up last year - and according to a new study, those benefits will continue to accrue.

Medicaid expansion will add 40,000 jobs and $30 billion to the state's economy through 2021, according to a new study Deloitte Consulting LLC and the University of Louisville's Urban Studies Institute released today. Expansion will also generate a net positive impact of nearly $820 million to state and local government budgets.

The report concludes that the estimated costs of expansion in the current and upcoming biennial budget would be more than offset by savings and new revenues generated from economic activity resulting from new health care spending. Conversely, choosing not to expand would have been expensive as well, incurring $100 million in costs.

Heidi Caron: Max Wise and Bam Carney wrong on Right to Work

She writes that union members were the original "Rednecks." 'Not just Miners but Carpenters, Electricians, Teachers, Police all owe their working conditions and security to Unions. Many work related laws came from Unions. Child Labor Laws, lunch and rest breaks,Unemployment Benefits, Workman's Compensation, Overtime and days off. Thank a Union. - HEIDI CARON

Personal opinion of the writer

Max Wise and Bam Carney want Kentuckians to support a Right to Work Bill. Stating that it's "not against Unions but it's for workers and job."

I don't agree with that statement and I'll tell you why. Unions were formed to protect workers during a time when conditions were deplorable for the American worker. Have we forgotten the Miners who fought and died in KY and WV for the right to Unionize?

It was with a heavy heart that we passed Senate Resolution 35 to honor our community's fallen firefighter, Captain Tony Grider, as I recognized Captain Grider's parents and immediate family, as well as Campbellsville Fire Chief Kyle Smith, Ret.
