On Monday, February 9, 2015, the Louisville Department of Housing & Urban Development recognized the Housing Authority of Columbia with an award for the "Small Public Housing Authority of the Year". This Housing Authority was selected from 122 (both small and large) Housing Authorities from within the State of Kentucky.

The award is presented to a housing authority that has achieved an outstanding score of success. The Columbia Housing Authority has consistently received scores in the high 90's since 2002 and in 2011 this agency received a perfect score of 100. These scores represent the management of the Housing Authority in the following categories: financial, physical/maintenance, occupancy and grant management. The success of this organization has been made possible with 3 dedicated staff which manages a total of 84 units located in both Columbia and Jamestown.

With capital grants, the Housing Authority is continuing to maintain and modernize the units with current energy and conservation measures. The most recent energy and conservation measures include energy efficient lighting, energy star appliances, water conservation measures, rain water barrels for watering raised garden beds and landscaping and a resident-operated paper and plastic re-cycling program.

Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and staff were present to accept this award on behalf of the Housing Authority.

Kenny Absher: Local library best entity taxpayers pay for

'I challenge you to show support for our library and let charity and pride begin at home.' - KENNY ABSHER
Comments re article 73109 Technology driving public library usage in Kentucky

By Kenny Absher

Our own local library provides many services to our community and the extras they do make them the best entity taxpayers pay for. They do more for less and unlike most of bureaucracies, do not waste $.51 of each dollar allotted to them.

The staff has always gone above and beyond the call of duty and I respectfully say "Thank You."

RRW: WRH being a VA clinic can't happen. Makes too much sense

By Ralph Waggener

If we had Westlake Regional Hospital be designated a clinic for vets who could use it and not need to make the 100 mile trip for their medical needs make a lot of sense? Of course it would. And that's most like the reason it can't happen, it makes sense. Of course the VA hospitals for more critical care should stay the same, but the way I see it this would help the Vets in our rural community, help the small hospitals and save energy by not having to make these long trips.

I understand the Veterans who go there are reimbursed for travel, and that costs even more money. Makes sense so it can't be. Just another one of my crazy thoughts! Always out of order, Ralph Roy Waggener

Technology driving public library usage in Kentucky

For first time circulation of e-books exceeds those from bookmobiles - and Kentucky's fleet of bookmobiles is the largest in the nation. Metcalfe County Public Librarian Rhonda Glass says e-books and Wi-Fi are bringing people back to the library.

From KY Department of Libraries

FRANKFORT, KY (12 Feb 2015) - Public libraries across Kentucky are reporting unprecedented usage as technology continues to change the way Kentuckians use their libraries.

Statistics compiled from Kentucky's 119 public libraries show that Kentuckians checked out 30,664,564 items during the 2013-2014 fiscal year, setting a record which was an increase of 2 percent over the previous year. The driving factor in this increase was the circulation of more than two million e-books. For the first time, the number of e-books checked out from public libraries in the state surpassed the number of items checked out from bookmobiles.
