KY Afield Outdoors: Planning spring fishing trips

This is the fifth of a series of articles detailing essential outdoor skills to learn before the warm winds of spring arrive in Kentucky.

By: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - There is a saying in fishing that goes "the best time to go fishing is when you can."

With the frenetic pace and busy schedules of modern life, the saying is true more than ever. However, if you only have a few weekends each spring to fish, the experience yields more stress reduction, enjoyment and memories if the fish bite like crazy.

Studying the long range forecast before planning a fishing trip and looking for the right trends helps bring you a glory day of fishing instead of a day of a thousand casts without a bite.

Adair Countian Melvin Traylor famed, also, as ornithologist

He was not only a favorite son of Illinois candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 1932, a highly respected Chicago and Hillsborough, TX banker, he was a highly respected ornithologist. He even had on bird named for him. This story by Jim, earlier posted as "Of Birds and Bankers," is reposted to help kick off another GBBC weekend, February 13-14-15, 2016. Related story: The Great American Bird Count starts at midnight

by Jim

During this, the Great Backyard Bird Count of '10, let us remember that one of the premier ornithologists of the 20th century had roots in the Auld Sod of Adair.

Every true Adair Countian knows the rags-to-riches story of native son Melvin Alvah Traylor, the lad of 20 years who left his home near Breeding a few days before Christmas 1898 on his way to Texas to seek his fame and fortune -- and found it. Mr. Traylor was briefly boomed as a Democratic candidate for president in 1932 and shortly before his death had been appointed to the advisory board of the National Broadcasting Company, a still-fledgling but quickly growing entity.

At the time of his death in 1934, Mr. Traylor was President of the First National Bank of Chicago. The Handbook of Texas Online notes that, among many other accomplishments, he was "credited with stopping depositors' runs on his own bank and on others as well" during the Depression

Landscaping at the courthouse

Commentary on Historic Adair County Courthouse

By Joyce M Coomer

The old courthouse is a landmark for this county. I think any landscaping done there should be minimal and suited to the time period when the courthouse was built. Please research historical landscaping before any decisions are made. Joyce M. Coomer

The Great Backyard Bird Count is February 13-14-15, 2015, It's been a popular tradition for many ColumbiaMagazine.com readers and Wendy Burt of the Adair County Garden Club sent a reminder to CM this morning that the GBBC starts at midnight. The website for the Great Backyard Birdcount is The Great Backyard Bird Count.

Instructions there are relative simple. We're not set up for the elaborate coverage of the event we've done in past years, nor will we have the simplified submissions offered in the past, and nearly constant updates, but we will welcome comments on the count as well as photo(s) local Bird Watchers send during the three day event, and thank. Local Veterans need a closer VA Hospital

Commentary by Jeffrey W. Campbell

To who it may concern,

My name is Jeff Campbell, I have been in the Army National Guard for 30 years, and a veteran for 24 years. I have traveled to Zorn in Louisville (96 miles) and Grayson CO (76 miles) many times over the past 24 years, and personally I think it would be a great thing for the veterans living in the Taylor, Green, Adair CO areas to have a VA Hospital closer to our homes.

It is a hardship to have to travel to Grayson CO, and Louisville (Zorn) for a VA appointment. I know they reimburse our gas expenses, but it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to get the reimbursement, and it is a safety issue for the disabled veterans being on the road for such a lengthy time, during each visit to the VA.

There is a building available in Adair County for such a place to start. I believe it would benefit many soldiers and the US Government. The veterans would be a lot closer to home, which would save several hours of traveling on highway, each time I go to Louisville and back home spend around 4 hours on the road, (less chance of getting in a accident) going to VA, save the government money on paying out money on fuel cost to veterans, and the chance of having another claim from an accident, while going to their appointment. And it would be easier on all of the disabled veterans health issues.

Thank you for taking the time to listening to my idea. --Jeffrey W. Campbell

Peg Schaeffer follows up on great results at Chamber meeting

Fund set up for spay/neuter program at First & Farmers National Bank. Half-price spay neuter program will be at Day & Day Feed & Pet. Click on headline for full details

By Peg Schaeffer

I spoke at the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday, Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015, about the need for low cost spay/neuter in the area. This is part of my speech:
Did you know? One female dog can produce 2 litters of 6-10 puppies per year. This means 1 unspayed female and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years. An estimated 80% of these dogs will be euthanized in shelters. Why spay? Do you know 67,000 people who want a new dog? A female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years.
The only way we can cut down on the number of unwanted pets in Adair County is to have affordable spay/neuter for residents' pets.
My talk seemed to open a lot of peoples' eyes.

Chance Barnett helps grant birthday wish for 9 year old boy

Chance Barnett saw a video which deeply impressed him. 'I knew I had to do something. It just called out to me.' he said. He called on a very special group of rising stars, his ACHS Class of 2016. When Barnett and Robin Mantooth approached them with the proposal, everyone was on board. The students devoted a class period to writing letters and sending their love and support to Bubby. Fellow teacher Amanda Randolph supplied the stickers, and the students mailed the letters and stickers on February 9, 2015.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Soon but not quite yet

Poetry by Robert Stone:
- a birthday sonnet for Clara Elizabeth Ellis
The going ups are harder than the downs,
the losses tend towards greater than the gains,
the sensible are too much like the clowns,
this outlook dominates what life remains.

But faith will never fail its duty clear,
and hope will ever sound its cheering call,
and love will cause despair to disappear,
these helps endure beyond the final pall.

So moments need a kindly word or deed,
the hours go gentle when desires are met,
and days calm when activities succeed,
the reckoning is soon but not quite yet.

How ever many are the days so far,
one wants another one for au revoir.
- Robert Stone
