Jon Halsey: Two quick thoughts on Brian Williams

Jon Halsey writes:
Just two quick thoughts and then I'll quit this thread.
  1. It now appears that the "plane incident" is only one of several lies that Williams has repeated over the years.
  2. Guy Perkins said it perfectly (as quoted by his wife in Sunday's column): "If he wants to participate in life, he is going to have to play by the rules."

Poetry by Joyce Coomer: As lovely as a tree

As lovely as a tree
by Joyce Coomer, with apologies to Joyce Kilmer
I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree . . .

Nor shall I ever see
A truck, a plane, a train
nor a soulless vacant plain
nor a concrete box for shopping place
nor pathways to service things like these
Have the beauty, grace and angel wings
God put into trees.
- Joyce M. Coomer

RRW: On Brian Williams, stupid should not be a career ender

Comments below reply to: Jon Halsey: Brian Williams 12 year cover up should end career

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Personal commentary

To John Halsey: You are right in that we should expect the highest standards from our media anchors. Expect, yes, But we are all fallible, all of us, even me. To expect that people will not occasionally do something stupid, well, is stupid because we all do stupid.

Hold to a high standard, but not a perfect standard; that's almost impossible to do.

Jon Halsey: Brian Williams 12 year cover up should end career

Comments re article 73025 RRW Comment on NBC Newsman Bryan Williams

By Jon Halsey
Personal Commentary

I understand Ralph's point(s) but it seems to me that if we are going to continue to give the members of the media extraordinary rights and constitutional privileges then we have the right to expect a higher standard of conduct than what Brian Williams and many others in today's media exhibit.

Should this be a career ender? I think so, given the fact that Williams has accepted the sacred mantle to inform the public accurately and he repeated this canard repeatedly over a twelve year period and when his veracity started to be questioned, he doubled down and then lied about the lie.

If this had not been done in the context of a "News" program it could be chalked up to "macho bravado" of the kind Ralph speaks of, but the fact remains that it was in the context of news and spit in the face of the particular freedoms granted the press that the rest of us do not enjoy.
