Emergency trip to Howard Clinic rivaled scenes in Thunder Road

But his uncle Titus "Tite" Jessie, got him there after Dr. Loy sent the writer, then five years old, there in a life-and-death-situation: a ruptured appendix. The trip was by way of the old Highway 80, then considered the crookedest road out of Columbia. But the highly skilled driver got him to Glasgow, at speeds of 80, 90, even 100 miles an hour. Saying, at one point, 'I'll get him there and he'll be alright, but that ol' Dr. Howard had better have his knife sharp, cause I'll get him there." The story was in black and white, but he remembers vividly he'd set a medical record in these parts: Dr. Howard declared him the youngest person he'd ever heard of with this condition

By Billy Joe Fudge

In 1956 at the age of 5, I was operated on by Dr. Howard at his clinic for a ruptured appendix. Dr. Loy sent me down there in a life and death situation. My Uncle Titus (Tite) Jessie took me to Glasgow by way of old Highway 80 in a scene that would have rivaled, if not surpassed, the action in the movie, Thunder Road.

I was one sick little boy but I can still remember that night trip that will be forever etched in black and white on the memory banks of my mind.

Gardening with Barbara Armitage: Moving the herbs indoors

Success with her favorite herb, basil, incites writer to expand indoor, kitchen-tableside herb acreage

By Barbara Armitage

Basil is one of the easiest of the garden herbs to grow indoors. With very little effort you will be harvesting a fresh bounty to keep your winter dinners reminding you of summer.

Last October I had to face one of the sad truths that all gardeners have to face. Frost warnings.

I was exhausted after working the garden all summer but I wasn't emotionally ready for the end of the season either. Standing in the middle of my garden last October I realized that there was little I could do to stop Mother Nature's onslaught. I had waited too late to organize row covers over everything so I decided to save what I could and kiss the rest good-bye.

Jim: Roads and weather were in the News 27 Jan 1915

News from the Adair County News from 100 years ago. With relevance to today by JIM

By JIM

A sad death, bad roads, fulsome and flattery; and Billy Sunday goes to Philadelphia.

A passing interconnectedness (perhaps intentional, perhaps not) occurred among some of the front page articles of the Adair County News edition dated January 27, 1915:

It took hearse four hours to go nine miles to Pleasant Hill Church
The previous week, a brief article had informed readers of the tragic death of Walter S. Taylor, the 26-year-old scion of a prominent family of Montpelier and a ministerial student at Transylvania College. The following week, the News indirectly referenced Walter's death by stating that after the remains arrived in Columbia from Lexington, the hearse departed town at 9 a.m. So deplorable were the road conditions it took the hearse four hours to traverse the nine miles to Pleasant Hill Church, at which place the funeral and interment were to take place.

Happy Tail: Peg remembers the beagle who loved to party

Peg Schaeffer got Beamer Allen Brown as a puppy. He was a dog who knew how to get his way, and he loved to party, and he loved to love. I was at the Wigwam Tack Shop in Connecticut one day and Donald Segar, the owner, asked me if I wanted a Beagle puppy. His female had puppies in February and only one had lived. He took me outside to a small pen where there was the fattest Beagle puppy I'd ever seen. Of course I brought him home.

Chip and I named him "Beamer".

Near miss at KY 61 S, Bypass: 1 second ahead of certain tragedy

But for one second, writer, cautious and on guard, would have been seriously injured or a fatality. She offers three suggestiions for the deadly intersection, including video surveillance and serious fines for those not obeying traffic laws. The intersection is Burkesville Street and its continuance as Burkesville Road & Adair Veterans Memorial Bypass.

By Peggy Fudge
Personal commentary

Thursday afternoon, (22 Jan 2015 - CM) I was on my way to Walmart by way of 61S. I approached the intersection with the By-pass and the light was red, so I stopped. Almost immediately it turned green. I don't trust anyone to drive safely through this light, so I checked to see if any traffic seemed to be pushing the yellow. From the east a semi was bearing down on the intersection and flew right through a red light. Not yellow. On my side the light was already green. He had apparently sped up to beat the light, resulting in his running a red light.
