Public input sought for KY long-term historic preservation plan

Online survey open. The survey takes five minutes to complete, at Survey Monkey.com/s/KYpreservation plan, and the agency is particularly interested in hearing from individuals who do not think of themselves as "historic preservationists."
New tools such as "Walk Score"(R) ratings have shown that higher walkability scores translate into higher real estate values, while traditional older neighborhoods designed with sidewalks, front porches and similar amenities to promote connectivity and social interaction are being replicated in developments utilizing new urbanist neighborhood design principles.

Ben Arnold clarifies Mayoral Election Petition

Comment about: Motion Hour, City for Columbia Mayoral Election Case, set for Mon 22 Dec 2014

By Ben Arnold
Personal Commentary

It appears there may be some misunderstandings concerning the recently filed Petition to Contest the Results of the 2014 Columbia Mayoral Election. It is important to distinguish what the Petition is and what it is not. The petition is not a lawsuit against anyone. Although some aspects of a standard lawsuit and a petition are similar, they different greatly in many respects. Our attorney, Elmer George, said the four Respondents listed in the Petition are required as formal notifications by law. They have the right to respond should they choose and/or they may be affected in some way should the election be set aside. There are no reasons to believe the Mayor/City Government or the other candidates did anything incorrectly. They were just listed as required by the process.

A petition is "A formally drawn request to one in authority or power asking for an action, in this case for the Court to evaluate the Mayoral election on voter rights. Many voters are unhappy with this election. Our Constitutional right to vote is fundamental to our exceptional country and rights as citizens, both at the national and local level. I supported this action only after much encouragement from voters and after reviewing the voting records as best I could. It was clear to me that many irregularities occurred and that many potential voters were not able to vote. These taken in total suggest the will of the voters may not have been determined with certainty. We are asking for the Court to review the election for voter irregularities and to decide if the rights of the voters are better served by a new election. - Ben Arnold

Holiday Safety: Preventing Christmas tree fires

By Greg Thomas, Adair County 9-1-1 Director

A fire on any day seems bad, but a fire at the Holiday season seems to be the worst. Some 300 trees caught fire in one recent year, with electrical problems the most common culprit. Here's how to keep your tree green and your presents safe.

  1. When you buy your tree, have the vendor make a fresh cut an inch from the trunk bottom; this will help the tree absorb water.
  2. If you buy your tree early and keep it outside, store it away from wind and sun, and keep the trunk bottom in a bucket of water.
  3. Make sure your lights are safe. If you need outdoor lights, make sure the ones you buy are meant for outdoor use.
  4. Make sure your lights carry certification from a testing laboratory.
  5. Do not use electric lights on a metal tree.
  6. Discard any strings of lights that are frayed or broken. Holiday lights are cheap.
  7. Unplug your tree before you leave or go to bed.
  8. Do not buy a tree that is dry and dropping needles. To check for freshness, loosely grip the end of a branch and pull your hand over it. Only a few needles should fall off.
  9. Make sure your tree stand holds plenty of water, and do not let it run out.
  10. If your tree seems wobbly, center it in the stand more securely and redo the bolts or screws. If your tree stand is cheap, buy a larger, stronger one.
  11. you buy an artificial tree, make sure it is fire-retardant.
  12. Keep your tree at least three feet from furnaces, radiators and fireplaces.
  13. Try to position the tree near an outlet so that cords are not running long distances. Do not place the tree where it may block exits.
  14. When the holidays are over or when the tree starts to drop needles, dispose of it. Do not leave it in your house or put it in your garage.
  15. Keep a close eye on small children when they are around the tree; many small decorations and ornaments are sharp, breakable and can be swallowed.
