JIM: Remembering Pearl Harbor, one year later, in Columbia, KY

Hard times, economically, were ending, and Christmas decorations were found on the Square in December 1941, but the memory of events in Hawaii almost one year later preempted thoughts in the Christmas message of the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co., which ran instead, an eloquent reminder of why America had to be in a war it had not wanted. (Story previously posted on CM on 2011-12-07 16:28:10 reposted today, Pearl Harbor Day Remembered as Adair Countians salute the Grand Marshals of the 2014 Christmas in Columbia Parade and the Grand Marshals - Veterans of WWII.)

By JIM

By the fall of 1941, the worst of the Great Depression was over, at least a few people had discretionary money, and late November found Columbia in the midst of Christmas preparations. Thanks in main to the efforts of County Attorney O.A. Durham and Lerman's manager Ben Green, by the Thanksgiving or thereabout, merchants around the Square had donated over seventy dollars for decorations, and the News proclaimed that "more elaborate decorations than in past years are planned," to-wit:

Mike Watson writes history on CIC 2014

Sales were brisk. Historian filled his Christmas stocking, so to speak, with 27 notes for story and book ideas and had time to visit other shops, and see his high school U.S. History teacher. Very importantly: The Courthouse Chili was good great. (For historical accuracy, CM has this opinion for another highly qualified source, Mr. Matt Baker of Columbia Security Systems, the anchor store in the Historic Courthouse. Mr. Baker is a foremost food auhority.

Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving with the Grandchildren

This is part 2 of a 2 part article. The previous installment is Carol Perkins: On the Road to Family

By: Carol Perkins

Guy and I, along with Carla and Joseph, arrived in Austin by late afternoon on Wednesday. Just as predicted, the Texas grandchildren we waiting at the door. Those hugs made the misery of the trip quickly fade.

Cooking a Thanksgiving meal together has become a tradition with Carla in charge of the grocery list and also in command of who does what. I cook the turkey, which involves a roasting bag. I can't make dressing as good as my friend and caterer Tommy Grissom of Edmonton can, so I took the dressing on ice all the way to Austin. "You're taking dressing to Austin?" Guy said critically.

"If a woman can take a pig on a plane, I can take dressing in a car."

Letter: Biggest Christmas in Columbia Parade Ever

By Debbie Selby
Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce

We are proud to say this was the largest parade we have had. I would like to thank all those who participated and made it a big success. Thank you to all who helped in traffic control and those precious souls who weathered the cold to assist in the lineup. I am so proud of our community coming together for things like this. The smiles on the children's faces makes it very satisfying. - Debbie Selby

Carol Perkins: On the Road to Family

This is part 1 of a 2 part series. The second installment is Carol Perkins: Thanksgiving with the Grandchildren

By: Carol Perkins

The road from Edmonton to Austin is a long and boring one, but the end results make the journey worthwhile. At the end of the road will be my son and his family. The family I see every three months, and making this seventeen hour trek is a means to an end. Why don't we fly? The prices of tickets have jumped from $250 per person to over $400. We like to have our car and we actually don't mind the journey once we get started. Guy would probably not agree since he does all the driving. He says I frighten him. I am ok with that because I'd rather ride and read.

Happy Tail - Mona and Tag

By: Peg Schaeffer

On the Monday before Thanksgiving Keith went out the door to leave for work and before I knew it he was back. There were two people at the gate to see me and they had a dog. I went out and there was a couple with the cutest little Beagle pup. In their car they had a black Pit Bull puppy. They told me they had been fishing at Plum Point and had found the pups feeding on a deer carcass. It was so cold out and the pups were so young they felt it was in their best interest to bring them to us.

Elvis: A Tragic Life

The date was July 5, 1954. A shy, mumbling, awkward nineteen-year-old young man recorded some popular songs of the day in the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee. He had said that he wanted to cut a record for his mother's birthday.

After stumbling through "Harbor Lights" and one or two other current standards of the day, something happened. The singer had been fumbling around with other popular ballads when he shouted out "That's All Right, Mama," and launched into an old Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup tune.

Hi! Where Are You From?

Most people like to brag about where they are 'from.' Nobody claims to be from 'here' even though they have lived 'here' much longer than the place they're 'from.'

I have lived in Oklahoma three tines as long as I lived in Nebraska. I have lived and raised a family here but no way do I say Oklahoma is where I am 'from'! Let me tell you about the place I am 'from.'
