Epicurean Kentuckian: Big, perfect heirloom tomatoes

2014-07-30 - Plunk Rock House - Photo by Ed Waggener.
It was celebration time at our house last night after Mrs. Marcum, left, warned of a man and woman in our drive, a rare thing out here on the edge of Downtown Columbia. But she and I were elated that we were on their missionary route, and were to share some of the most beautiful and biggest heirloom tomatoes we seen in a long time. It was Patsy & Bruce Wilson; we were sandwiched in between tomato care package recipients Ralph Roy Waggener and Rollen Coomer - not bad company at all. The top left tomato was our supper. It was the best I've ever tasted, and would have taken a blue ribbon at the fair. That's what my Dad, the late E.P. Waggener, would have said after enjoying such a gift. - EW

Settlement results in $1.2 million in debt relief for 228 Kentucky servicemember

CRACKDOWN ON PREDATORY LENDING YIELDS BENEFITS: Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway announces settlement benefiting servicemembers harmed by predatory lending scheme. Under the terms of the settlement, approved earlier this month by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, servicemembers will keep all merchandise financed through Rome Finance, and all outstanding debts owed to the company have been erased and marked "paid in full" with consumer finance reporting agencies. In addition, Tuesday's resolution bans new business by the company, which is no longer in operation, and its principals. Rome Finance has been the subject of previous state and federal enforcement actions and Colfax is currently in Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Columbia/Adair County has had a Chamber of Commerce since 1942, which was incorporated in 1957, under the guidance of Columbia Attorney Earl Huddleston, George Akin, John Horton, Lynn Jeffries, Alvin Lewis, and Ruth Richardson. Thelma Stovall was Secretary of State at the time. This story is one of a series planned to remember 57 years of service.

By Sue Stivers

How much do you know about your local Chamber of Commerce? Did you know that a group of business leaders got together and decided there should be a Chamber of Commerce in Columbia?

The year was 1942 and it was named the "Columbia Chamber of Commerce". It was one of the first cities in South Central Kentucky to have a Chamber.

Invest In Adair County: Buy Local

'Every time you purchase a product at a locally owned and operated business, you are investing in people you know. You are creating jobs and putting food on local dinner tables. And that's something that ought to make you feel really good about yourself (maybe even a little proud).' - J. BRANDON THOMPSON

By J. Brandon Thompson

Have you ever noticed how pride is one of those tricky emotions that can go either way? I mean, sadness is exclusively bad and happiness is always a welcomed feeling. But pride is either the emotion that precedes your demise or it's that feeling that makes your chest swell, your eyes well up with tears, and that lump to form in your throat.
